New First Time Garden, advice appreciated!

Hello All - Well the missus and I have decided to go for a garden. I think we're in Zone 20 or 21. Gonna build a garden next week....here's what I've got in mind, and would welcome any input.

5 raised boxes, 4 ft x 10 ft.
Step 1: Level ground
Step 2: Build boxes with 2 x 12 Doug Fir set on 2 x 4 pressure treated.
Step 3: Lay 1/4" galvanized wire on ground
Step 4: Staple plastic inside of boxes (to protect wood from decay)
Step 5: Fill planter boxes with our dirt (DG hard red dirt) and horse manure, which we have plenty of at our place, also goat and chicken poop.
Step 6: Plant. But we don't know what/where/when.....need advice on that.

I figure 4 boxes at 40 sq ft ea for veggies and then 1 for herbs and spices.

Thoughts?
