Anyone else suffer from migraines? How do you endure them?

I suffered from migraines for about 2 years ending about 6-7 months ago. They came & went. I remember the first time I got a migraine - I was playing Half-Life 2 & the visual disturbances (sometimes called an aura, look it up if you don't know what that is) started. They would occur monthly, sometimes twice monthly. Only once did I have two migraine "episodes" (as in the aura came & went, then came & went again) in one day.

I never found out precisely what my trigger was. Usually, migraines have a trigger - something you consume or are around that triggers an episode, similar to an alergy. However, about 6-7 months ago, they stopped. I haven't got an aura/migraine since then, except for very small, "warning" spots (I call the first small patches of a forming aura this) which are neither preceded or anteceded by the actual migraine. The migraines were very powerful for me, they usually knocked me out for 1-2 hours. If I was at work, I had to go home immediately - a lot of the time I'm pretty sure my boss didn't believe me. Unfortunately, and I don't know if it's coincidence or as a result of the visual disturbances, my eyesight has deteriorated a bit since then.

Do you suffer from migraines? What's your experience like? How do you endure one? Do you know of any ways to "treat" them or methods to endure them? I once spoke to a guy who claimed he had a migraine aura 24/7, but I'm not sure I believe him.

If you've never experienced the "aura" before, it's quite a thing... it's also impossible to explain what it looks like. Imagine all the colours of the visible spectrum, viewed through your eyes, except for a small patch that appears to be completely void of anything - it's not any colour you can identify, and it's absent of any visuals - but it's not white or black... it's just... nothing.

Anyone else suffer from migraines? How do you endure them?

Didn't work out like I thought

So I was selling some ammo cans online... Person came to buy them. I offered them a free machete with the ammo cans... "Oh I have like 3 machetes, I'm a prepper. no thanks".

Nope, tried to talk about prepping and it was awkward, told him about this site. Any suggestions on how to ease into prep talking? Or is it that a lot of preppers are just secretive and just deal with it?

What IF Fact Based Reasons For Racism/Sexism?

This thread is motivated by the public reaction to recent shootings. The reluctance to study (read science) race or sex based differences for fear of being called a racist or sexist is at odds with the politics of our time. (NOTE: I am equating recognizing race sex based differences with racism and sexism).

For instance, I recall reading several articles on DNA studies that showed scientists detect no DNA evidence for what is typically referred to as race. CONCLUSION: RACE DOES NOT EXIST. Yet, at the same time (this was 2010), I read the Obama administration had increased the number of races one can identify with on the census than ever before. CONCLUSION: RACE EXISTS (IN REALITY) AND IS PROLIFERATING.

Another example is how so many feminists claim the only non-physical difference between boys and girls is how they are raised; socialization of gender, I believe was the theory. CONCLUSION: GENDER IS A SOCIAL CONSTRUCT. Yet, at the same time there are so many headlines about woman are victimized because they are woman lacking power. CONCLUSION: GENDER EXISTS (IN REALITY) DETERMINING LIKELIHOOD OF VICTIMIZATION. (It should be noted that despite the headlines, men are more likely to be robbed or shot).

The above paragraphs include contradictory conclusions. Here are some facts not contradicted that I know of. Women live longer than men. Men die at higher rates at every age group. In fact, most who study the subject believe even most miscarriages involve a male fetus. Blacks, though a minority in the US population, dominate major sports teams and prison populations. There are certain diseases that effect almost exclusively Jewish people and Black people. http://ift.tt/1xlaZEG.

I only recently learned about how Tay-Sachs disease affects only the Jewish. And this fact got me thinking about fact based reasons to be racist and sexist. I put this in the controversial news thread and realize there are many other facts that could be presented - or generated. By that, I mean, the census seems to be a way to generate fact based differences among the races. I suppose the http://ift.tt/Sf163h is debatably in that category. But the life expectancy and propensity for certain diseases makes me conclude race based differences exist in reality and not merely political.

Now, I hope this thread does not deteriorate into hateful trolling. I wonder if the political opposition to racism and sexism extends to do a disservice to dealing with the fact based differences among the races, men and women. It discourages research on why men die younger than women. It causes DNA scientists to make the outrageous statement that race does not exist because they cannot find it in the DNA while simultaneously admitting the characteristic physical traits through generations. Thoughts?

Fmr. CIA Dir. Jim Woolsey warns of existential EMP threat to America [Video]

Not sure if this made it up here or not already.

Quote:

Washington, D.C.: On July 29th, President Bill Clinton's former Director of Central Intelligence, R. James Woolsey, led a panel discussion on the growing -- and perhaps imminent -- threat of a natural or nuclear electromagnetic pulse (EMP) to the U.S. electric grid and other critical infrastructures that sustain modern civilization and the lives of millions of Americans. The event was sponsored by the newly established EMP Coalition, of which Mr. Woolsey is the Honorary Co-Chair along with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich

Other participants were Ambassador Henry Cooper and Dr. Peter Vincent Pry. Ambassador Cooper led strategic arms control negotiations with the USSR under President Reagan and served as the Director of the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization under President George H.W. Bush. His is currently the Chairman of High Frontier, an organization dedicated to protecting the United States from nuclear attack. Dr. Pry served on the Congressional EMP Threat Commission, as a professional staff member on the House Armed Services Committee and as an analyst in the CIA. He is now the Executive Director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security, a congressional advisory board dedicated to national resiliency in the face of EMP and other threats.

At 2:30 am I put on my uniform and for 8-12 hours do something that matters.

You passed me on the road, I saw the face you made as you tapped the brakes and checked your speed.

Maybe you walked past me at a store, perhaps you said hi, most likely not though.

Maybe you saw me and I looked angry, not knowing that an hour ago I was first on scene to see the bodies of the young mother and child killed by a drunk driver, something that will haunt my sleep for days.

I turn on the news see the hatred and distrust that people have for my brothers and I, yet we will come when you call no matter what.

We remind you that evil exists, that there is a line between chaos and order.

At the end of my shift I go home take off my uniform and try to forget the days tragedy, not being able to show any emotion at the time because I have a job to do.

Maybe you pass me in the grocery store, even.off duty I am still watching over you but I am just a nameless, face in the crowd.

At 2:30 am I will be ready to do it all over again.

How long would an M2-Bradley last with it's track blown off?

Just wondering if, with a scarcity of fuel, how long a Bradley would last if immobilized and without logistical support?

The setting is a post-apocalyptic town. Once it's fuel was out would it lose traverse from a depleted battery? Or is there a manual operation allowing it to function as a fixed-gun position?

New Years Resolution Thread!

So, the new years is soon and I have some changes I'll be making in my life. Some can be called "resolutions" but others are just one time goals. I, personally enjoy having people to talk to about my goals, and keep me motivated. I'd like to offer an open invitation to all the folks here on the board. If you have resolutions or goals this year, and feel you'd benefit from some friends keeping you motivated, join me!

If anyone's interested I'll start a group on the board.

For ease of communication, definitions.

Resolutions are a continuing thing; something that ends, if you want it to as of January 1st 2016. Example: "Work out everyday!"

Goals are accomplishments that, if you feel you've reached a personally acceptable. IE "Get a six pack!"

I just turned 20 a few days ago, I'm working at Starbucks,a pretty great employer, I live with family but I pay a good amount of rent. It's a hefty piece of my paycheck but foods taken care of as well. I cannot move out, because of the cost of living in my area. I'm focusing on my finances before I make the "Next move." My love is psychology, an

My Goals Are:

Get a drivers license.

Take at least three free online classes through Coursea or other similar programs

Get a Second Job. (This is a maybe depending on my companies raise)

Get a fishing pole.

Take A Micro Facial Expression Class via Ekmann international.

Learn Basic Spanish.

Make a Bike Cart.

Make an Emergency kit for my bike.

Sell a few things.

Maybe more we'll see!

Resolutions

Put 5-10% of my paycheck into silver.

Write 500 words a day.

For every night out, I'll put 15% of the amount of money I spend into savings

Go pier fishing once a week.

Do the 52 week money challenge.

Carry my EDC every day.

Collect 20 cans/bottles everyday I work and turn them once a month and save that money for the end of the year, I think I'll use it for my first handgun (have to be 21 in CA) for a trip,or for holiday gifts.

Carry a to do list

Again, maybe more!

Tricks I'll use to help along the way.

Keep a notebook which will double as my to do list, with my goals in my back pocket.

Keep a journal of my progress.

Hopefully I'll have someone else to help me out!

Need new project rifle

I need a new project rifle really badly.

My AR is the way I want it without putting in $5k. I've built a cool AR pistol. I did the cool 10/22 conversion.

So I'm trying to brainstorm my next project gun. Thinking about building AK or AR-10? Thinking about some kind of precision .308 maybe but I hear the AR-10 is a pretty frustrating design. Also thinking about building a 1911 but man that sounds like a huge money dump.

Anyway - just brainstorming. Would appreciate any input.

Shelf life of medication?

I had surgery last month. The surgeon gave me Oxy and Hydro's for the pain. I'm doing pretty well and have these medications left over. I was thinking of vacuum sealing them and storing them for later/emergency use in my hiking bag.

What is the shelf life?

Best way to store them?

Thanks!

Shelf life of medication?

Best gear "sitting idle" in BOB, GHB, etc.

In addition to BOBs for me and my wife, I also have a GHB, a stocked sling pack/mag carrier, and what I call a "mission bag" along the lines of what I've seen others describe as an INCH bag. As I suspect is true for many people, these bags (fortunately) don't really see any use; I generally only open mine to check expiration dates and seals on some of the contents. It has occurred to me that while there are always forum members who insist on carrying nothing less than the best in their various packs (guns, ammo, knives, tools, flashlights, etc.) I find it difficult to stow some of my best, typically most expensive knives "hardware" in a bag that never leaves the basement, closet or trunk.

I almost always have a knife, multi-tool and flashlight on me (EDC) or immediately accessible, but none that are necessarily the best. Likewise, the other packs I mentioned contain functional, versatile equipment but not by any means the best. When I go camping or hiking or just working in my garden or back yard, I usually reach for a "beater" knife that I trust to hold up to some wear and tear. Meanwhile, my most durable knives (Emerson Mini A-100, Benchmade Adamas 275, various "hard use" fixed blades) sit comfortably around the house. The flashlights and multi-tools I routinely use are sufficient for routine use, but I have better . . . sitting on shelves or in drawers. I could choose any one of them for some actual, honest work, but can't bring myself to tuck them into a BOB or GHB.

As much as I feel that tools are meant to be used, I guess I find it a stretch to call stashing something in a pack the best use for a quality tool. Is it just me?

Best gear "sitting idle" in BOB, GHB, etc.

Propane Tank

I recently purchased a refurb 500 propane tank to replace the one being "leased" by the local rip-off propane company. The tank did not come with a high pressure regulator and neither the big box stores or chain hardware stock this kind of regulator and are clueless. The regulator on the old tank was a Fisher Control R300 but I am unable to determine PSI pressure that it puts out (looked it up online). I am told that the amount of output is gauged by the usage in the house. I have a heat pump with a 75,000 BTU back-up propane furnace. I also have two 5,000 BTU propane wall heaters and a 28,000 BTU ventless propane wall mounted heater. The two small heaters are used very little and the large one is used for short periods of time. The water heater and stove are both electric. The run distance from the propane tank is 150 ft. of half inch ID copper line to the low pressure regulator. With this information provided, is there anybody out there who can provide me with an opinion as to what PSI output the regulator should be.. I've also seen adjustable regulators that can vary the PSI output as needed (I assume).. I'll take any help I can get at this point...

2009 liberty parts Question

First off, it was purchased as a family vehicle but been seeing a lot of trails lately. I have attempted to locate a decent catalog/parts supplier to enhance its offroad capabilities, but most suppliers don't carry newer liberty aftermarket parts or in very limited numbers..... Are there suppliers available I am not finding? Or should I consider another vehicle? I don't really want to beat it up, just make sure with proper wheeling it will get me back.

State Dept. delaying release of Clinton records

WASHINGTON (AP) - The State Department has failed to turn over government documents covering Hillary Rodham Clinton's tenure as secretary of state that The Associated Press and others requested under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act ahead of her presumptive presidential campaign. They include one request AP made four years ago and others pending for more than one year.

The agency already has missed deadlines it set for itself to turn over the material.

The State Department denied the AP's requests, and rejected the AP's subsequent appeals, to release the records sought quickly under a provision in the law reserved for journalists requesting federal records about especially newsworthy topics.

In its requests, the AP cited the likely prospect of Clinton entering the 2016 race. The former first lady is widely considered the leading Democratic contender hoping to succeed President Barack Obama. She has made scores of recent high-profile speeches and public appearances.

On Wednesday, the conservative political advocacy group Citizens United sued the State Department for failing to disclose flight records showing who accompanied Clinton on overseas trips.

Citizens United, which in 2009 mounted a legal battle that led to the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning campaign finance limits, said the department unlawfully was withholding the records it sought nearly five months ago.

The State Department is among the U.S. government's worst-performing federal agencies under the Freedom of Information Act. There is no direct evidence that political considerations in a Democratic presidential administration have delayed the release of files about the party's leading contender for 2016. But the agency's delays, unusual even by government standards, have stoked perceptions about what could be taking so long.

"There may not necessarily be political interference, but if the department went out of its way to speed these documents there would be no way for people to accuse them of it," said Thomas Blanton, who has previously sued the State Department for access to records as director of George Washington University's National Security Archive, a research organization.

The department "is stonewalling us," said Citizen United's president, David Bossie. He asserted that "these decisions are being made with Hillary Clinton's intentions at heart," but acknowledged he could provide no evidence of political interference.

Bossie, a former Republican congressional investigator who researched figures in the Clinton administration, said his group's film unit wants the records for a sequel to its documentary about Clinton, which spurred the Citizens United court decision.

The group first asked Air Force officials for passenger lists from Clinton's overseas trips but was told all flight records were under the State Department's control. "These were Air Force flights and crews but State has the records?" he said, adding that his group has submitted 15 Clinton-related requests in the past six months.

The AP's requests go further back.

The AP requested copies of Clinton's full schedules and calendars from her four years as secretary of state; her department's decision to grant a special position for longtime aide Huma Abedin; Clinton's and the agency's roles in the Osama bin Laden raid and National Security Agency surveillance practices; and her role overseeing a major Defense Department contractor. The AP made most of its requests last summer, although one was filed in March 2010.

State Department spokesman Alec Gerlach cited the department's heavy annual load of FOIA requests - 19,000 last year - in saying that the department "does its best to meet its FOIA responsibilities." He said the department takes requests "first in, first out," but noted that timing depends on "the complexity of the request." He declined to comment on Citizen United's suit.

In a previous communication, a State Department official apologized for its own delays responding to AP's records requests without offering any explanation for the delays.

"We sincerely regret the delay," said Lela H. Ross of the Office of Information Programs and Services, which administers the agency's requests. The official did not explain the delays but cited the agency's "complex and lengthy administrative FOIA process."

Last May, the State Department told the AP that its search for records pertaining to Clinton and the defense contractor would be completed by August. The agency said it now expects the files to be available later this month. Similarly, the agency said the Clinton and Abedin records would likely be completed in September. Now it says it will not finish until next April. The 4-year-old FOIA request still has no estimated completion date.

The agency's pace responding to requests for Clinton-related files has frustrated news organizations, archivists and political groups trying to research her role at the State Department in the months before Clinton decides whether to formally enter the 2016 race.

At stake is the public's access to thousands of documents that could help understand and define her activities as the nation's chief diplomat under Obama.

Other major document repositories have released thousands of pages of files about Clinton's private and public life.

Since February, lots of previously restricted records from her years as first lady to President Bill Clinton have been made public by the Clinton Presidential Library. Last month, the University of Virginia's Miller Center presidential oral history collection unveiled dozens of interviews with key players from the Clinton White House.

The State Department generally takes about 450 days to turn over records it considers to be part of complex requests under the Freedom of Information Act. That is seven times longer than the Justice Department and CIA, and 30 times longer than the Treasury Department.

An inspector general's report in 2012 criticized the State Department's practices as "inefficient and ineffective," citing a heavy workload, small staff and interagency problems. A study in March by the nonpartisan Center for Effective Government said the State Department was the worst-performing agency because of its delays and frequent failure to deliver the full number of files that people requested.

Basically, they dont have any evidence (yet) that its politically motivated, but..yeah, its politically motivated.

Oklahoma City, OK – Kinney Glasson, 33, called the police around 3:00 AM. Police searched the neighborhood for suspects, but never found any.[.....]

Reconstituting honey today. Using the oven light to do it. I replace the oven light bulb with a 100 watt bulb. Then leave it in until it is done. The temperature is around the 102 degree mark with just the bulb. No need to watch it, just let it do its thing.

I noticed I have gone from “Newbie” to “Member” now. I guess it won’t be long I will be a “General”, hehe.

Oh yea, one more thing. Don't forget to change the bulb back before you use the oven to cook with again.

Hatchet vs Hawk

Which do you prefer and why?

When I left the Marine Corps I was gifted a plaque with an SOG Voodoo Hawk mounted on it, never thought much of it. A short while back I needed my hatchet for some firewood while camping with my family. Long story short I didn't have anything except that plaque shoved under my seat, I dismantled the plaque and began using the Voodoo Hawk and was actually pleasantly surprised. I haven't done any heavy chopping or wood splitting like I have with my hatchet so I can't speak to that but it is great for small brush clearing where a machete just isn't enough.
