I believe that circumstances can and has made a mild mannered school teacher into a hero at small town in PA. More, a rough man of the people could and did become the greatest President of all time.

Hello all, new guy here from Houston, Texas. I've been a lurking member for some months, just never posted. I have learned quite a bit from reading the topics here, like in the communications section.



It taught me enough where I could go out and look at the different radios and choose one type for my needs. I'm even looking into the HAM stuff.



Red6 was my brother's call sign during his 2005 tour in Iraq with the 3rd ID. I couldn't come up with a user ID and I was looking at some of his old pictures and came up with that.



I've been interested in the survival subject since I was a kid (Red Dawn Era), read all the old survival magazines of the time and kind of lost interest in it for awhile......then Hurricane Ike came through Houston in 2008. It did some real damage and we lived off a generator for a month and a half. It was a real eye opener and reminder of good preparedness!



I look forward to learning much more from you guys!

Replacing sight aperture

I have a Troy fixed rear sight with the diamond aperture. I like the sight picture but not the styling of the sight. Does anyone know if I can switch the aperture into a standard A2 sight on a removable carry handle?

I screwed up, had a home invasion, OPSEC

Friday night I was home alone. The wife and kid were staying at a friends house for a birthday party so our car was gone. My truck had been borrowed by another friend so he could move some stuff. With no vehicles in my garage or driveway other than my work vehicle it made it appear that nobody was home. I live in rural Iowa in a town of about 200 people. Up until now, we had always left our house unlocked, keys in vehicles, etc. due to where we live. I have 2 dogs. 1 is a 100 lb yellow lab and 1 is a rat terrier. In an effort to keep our house cleaner we don't wear shoes inside. It was raining here Friday night



I went to bed about 11. I laid in bed for awhile watching tv. At about 1130 I heard a strange click come from the kitchen area. It was loud enough that it woke my lab who was sleeping on the bed at my feet. I looked at him and he was watching out the doorway with his ears cocked forward. He didn't growl or bark or anything so I didn't think to much about the noise. Both of my dogs normally bark at every little thing. If a car goes by or if somebody walks by on the street the dogs go nuts. Since the noise didn't make the dogs bark, I wasn't to concerned about it. I turned off the tv and went to bed



I woke up Saturday morning to start my day like any other. I went to the kitchen to make some coffee. When i entered my kitchen, I seen mud tracked all over the floor. The mud traveled from my side door which leads out tp my garage all the way through kitchen to the carpet that begins at my living room. It took me a couple seconds to realize why. My mind raced and my heart sank. I immediately strapped on my gun and began to search the house for anything missing or out of place. I called the cops and told them what happened. I also told them it was no hurry but for someone to stop by when in the area. As i waited, I went outside and walked around the house looking for shoe prints, cigarette butts, or anything out of place. I found a shoe print in a spot at the bottom of the stairs from my rear deck. This spot gets a lot of foot traffic and because of this the grass here is dead and gone. I could see some mud heading up the stairs to my rear sliding glass door which just happened to be locked. I glanced at my neighbor to the south who happened to be standing in his back yard. I walked over to tell him what happened.



Before I am able to say anything,he says to me, "my shed door is hanging wide open. I think somebody was rummaging through my shed last night." I then told him somebody was rummaging through my house last night. He couldn't find anything missing. I returned back to my yard



Then my neighbor to the north came outside. He lives alone and is roughly 90 years old with heart problems. I told him what had happened. He said, " now that you mention it I heard noises in my house last night too. I figured it was one of my kids stopping by to check on me and I didn't bother getting up. I called them this morning and they said they were not there."



When the cops arrived I and my neighbors filed a report. With nothing missing and the only evidence a shoe print and some tracked mud the cops didn't think anything would become of what took place



From here on out, all doors and vehicles will be locked. A loaded firearm will be on me or by me at all times. I am installing motion lights this afternoon.



What I assumed happened is somebody tried to come in through my back door, stepped in mud, and couldn't get in. Then they came in through my garage and side door. They came in and got as far as my living room before they heard my tv on and realized someone was home. They then left.



Its some freaky stuff. I couldn't sleep at all last night. I think both myself and my neighbors got pretty lucky. It could have been a lot worse. Even though I live in the boonies I will never again become complacent. This has shown me that I need to work on opsec. Up until now stuff like this just didn't happen around here.

after moving to VA, i decided to keep a GHB in my truck/car. currently, i have a few bars of the compressed food stuff....like mayday bars. also, there are a few packets of emergency drinking water. what about keeping 1-2 bottles of filtered water....will the extreme temps hurt it? expand the bottle to leak? would it be better to have new sealed bottles, or just a refilled one?

I've never been much impressed with the usual assortment of UN troops, but the Syrian rebels bit off a bit more than they could chew this time because this UN contingent was Filipino. Our wayward Pacific brothers have some real fighting spirit as has been proved over the last century. They have been fighting Muslim insurgents long before the West ever conceived of the problem. No way they were going to back down from another nest of these jihadists.

Remote camera's

Does anyone have any information or hands experience with remote camera's.

What we are considering is installing some camera's on our property when we are not there. Right now the property is just bare land, but we will be making improvements soon. Improvements such as well, electric, and a septic system. The next step will be to build some structures such as a storage shed, and a pavilion for a camper trailer which will be there year round. We would like to be able to keep an eye things when we are not there or at the very least, see what wild life shows up.

What are you putting in your faraday cage?

I have read many posts about how to make a faraday cage, but I have not seen a lot on what people are needing a faraday cage for. The extent of my electronics include my cell phone, laptop, and radios. So why do people make those giant trashcan sized faraday cages? What the heck are they putting in it?



Maybe I do not fully understand the extent of the damage an EMP could cause. Are ALL battery powered items like flashlights affected?



I drive a 1996 Jeep Cherokee. I know it is not protected from an EMP, but if I heard that an EMP was headed my way (I know the point of a terrorist attack is to be surprising, but IF I got a heads up) is there anything I could do to save it? Anything I could take out of it and put in my faraday cage?

Snakes are fair game and good eating if you're hungry. But there are poisonous snakes that are off-colored for their species (like albino coral snakes) and if you just happen to decide to play with one because snakes are so much fun...

Glad President Obama has cleared this up: while I was concerned about various scandals and the general incompetence of this administration, it turns out that it's the media's fault for reporting too much news. Oh, and social media is also causing this:

I thought this was just typical liberal/progressive/socialist spin nonsense, but then I got to thinking...



For Obama, it is the media's fault and I can understand how he believe this.



From the time he was a young college student adults and other authority figures have told Obama how special he is, how articulate he is. Heck, Joe Biden said he's even clean.



He was admitted into colleges he never would have earned his way into if he wasn't black, was toasted and feted by every liberal holding a glass of champaign and earned a Nobel Peace Prize because, well, he was Obama.



People couldn't wait to vote for him to underscore their love of diversity, a vote to prove how open minded they were, a vote that included their being involved in an historic occasion.



Imagine a white junior senator with little political experience, no military experience and a job resume that was highlighted by a job described as a 'Community Organizer' running for president.



Now, Obama can't figure out why the media isn't turning upside down to continue to praise him. For the first time in his life he is being evaluated on merit and not only does he not like this, he can't understand why merit should apply to him.



After all, it never has in the past.



So obviously, it's the media's fault...

I am not in the camp that Obama is a secret Muslim Brotherhood type...nor do I believe that Muslims are an evil group/religion. I know their religion has been hijacked by a large by minority group within their sect.



I will say the actions of our govt can only be described as:

1) Preparing for war against Citizens who will fight for the Constitution.

2) Enabling known enemies of the US to be able to conduct terror exercises by undermining border security.

3) Ignoring Constitutional law when practicing executive privileges



Why prepare for war against Constitutionalist? Why not prepare for war against Islamic Terrorists?



Why involve your administration in local affairs? Why not involve yourself in national matters?



How can anyone make the case that he is behaving like a President? I see him acting against the principles this Country was founded on. I see him working against liberty.

How to get rid of termites

I think I might have termites. They come out at night around my bathroom window. I don't see them during the day. They are in the wall and come up from between the window and the wall. They are small right now. They are white and they have wings.



Can I get rid of them myself or do I have to call an expensive exterminator?



The house was treated five years ago by the prior owners. They came out and drilled holes into the brick.



I would like to get rid of them myself. We have a farmers Co op near by that sells lots of different poison. If you know of a good proven one, please let me know. I dread shelling out a bunch of money to an exterminator. Although, repairing termite damage would be even more expensive.

Bought An Old AR-15 From A Guy

Nice old model, low serial #,Colt Conn. had the three prongs on the muzzle. Very little scuffs or wear on that flat black finish, got the box. I think i paid 275. He had some half-assed connection to Pekin Il Police, some jack-ass story It looked good had the sling. It wasnt all that accurate tho. The trigger pull was sticky. You'd pull the trigger back a little way, it would stick then it would go past this to fire. In other words very heavy trigger pull. So after a while i got tired of this, so i pushed the pin out to get the gut out. Now i can see the problem. So just took a piece of really fine emory paper and smoothed the sear just gently, like you'de smooth your fingernail. So i put it back back together, now it's firing three round bursts. Gal damn..i This gun fires so fast it almost sounds like it's one round almost and the recoil is if it's one round. This was impressive to me .This was a few years ago i traded it to my friend Gary for a skiff.he took it to Canada and it went to the bottom of Great Slave Lake in the Yukon Province in an unfortunate boating accident.. If I'd only been there...It's much too complicated to recount.....

I'm looking to set up a cache outside of my house filled with stuff. I live in the city so I do have worries that there will be a fire that destroys the house. This has made me want to put together a safe guard in case this was to happen. I'd like to get a 55 gallon drum, bury it outside, and put my best gear inside as well as some money. My problem is that I don't know how well it'll be protected against the heat and water while there. I've seen what neighborhood fires can do to a house next to it, and the farthest point from my house is 12'. What do you suggest? Should I store it someplace else or would this work? Give me your advice please.

I found it interesting that he is using an MSR fuel bottle; they are interchangeable with Optimus products. I've got a multifuel Nova that is bottle fed that required a MSR bottle to operate (i couldn't find an optimus bottle either). The multi fuel stove will run on any petroleum distillate, it resides in my GMHB along with a siphon if I should have a extended walk home.....

After the grid shut down?

One of the biggest fears I have is if the east coast grid goes down, when will the nuclear reactors go. They only hold so much fuel for generators to power the pumps. If or when they go the entire eastern half of the United States will be decimated of life. After that it won't take long for the fall out to travle around the world. I fear there will be no safe haven for anyone or any living thing. I can't believe so many people think nuclear power is safe and clean. We've killed off hundreds of species around the world. Humans are truly the ultimate plague. Are we really destined to go out like that? Someone please give me a little hope.

Its just a typical, attached 3-car garage. I'm in North Alabama where the heat and humidity is notorious. I'm not too worried about security as the garage is armed with an alarm.

Hi all, new guy here! I'm a 40-something professional with a keen interest in preparedness, survival skills and techniques, hunting, long-range shooting and four wheel driving/camping. I've long had the desire to live off the grid, as much as one can these days, and am working towards that currently.

At least two Tulsa area lakes have been infected with e. coli bacteria and have remained infected all summer. Experts predicted the bacteria would wash away with normal water flows but it has remained all summer.

Interestingly, one article blamed the outbreak on geese but we all know that geese have been around for millions of years and the lakes weren't contaminated before. Geese may be the delivery system today but where did the geese get it? Probably from eating near cows that were fed cows.



E. coli contamination is the product of profits-at-any-price capitalism and is a huge threat to our water systems.



If you're counting on local river or lake water for survival, you should think again. Our food supply has been contaminated beyond safety and our water supply is going next.

When you fill tanks for water storage, do you use water straight from your tap or do you filter it first? There's a lot of chlorine in the water here. Wouldn't a little chlorine be beneficial in storing water? We use Brita filters for drinking and cooking.

Prepping Is Neverending... Do I Have OCD?

Everyday I wake up and go to excel, try to recategorize preps I have and don't have. My documents list is over 4000 items. Everything from 1lb bags of rice listed under "Barter" to splatter masks under "Medical - Subsection: Contagion Protection".



Then I spend an hour going over various lists online. Medical blogs, food storage blogs, weapons blogs, ect ect... And always come up with new 'needs'.



I never feel everything is in its proper category and easiest found location. CI never feel I have the exact ratio of canned tomato sauce for 2 people for X months/years set. I never feel I have enough varieties of tape or glue or knives. I can't decide on the exact proportions for homemade laundry detergent and continue to test formulas even though I have over 100 gallons. I set aside $600/mo for preps and can spend that in 2 hours on payday. Then I have 30 days of wondering if that knife was where I should have spent $60, or if I should have bought more canning jars.



Blah. Meh. Middle of the night and my brain won't shut up.



Let's hope I win the lotto or marry someone with the preps I'm missing. Lol

After an opening day washout (1st time) they are now burnin' away in the middle of Nevada's Black Rock Desert.



10 months ago, I set a goal to attend this year. I'm currently in the Charlotte, NC area reveling in my complete failure.

I WILL make it to Burning Man 2015. For me, its about the adventure and extreme conditions involved. There is a HUGE body of information on what to bring and how to survive the conditions out in the middle of the desert for 7 straight days.



I will and/or/either group up with existing NC Burning Man groups or form my own. Obviously, there should be some Burn Vets involved for experience. It would be interesting to collect a few brave Survivalists to converge and form a camp in Black Rock City.

Ok so I have been trying to make a library for my house i have shelves on both sides of the room from wall to wall and it's almost done one one side i have psychology and the other side is practical skills like hunting and what not, So i am looking for definitive type books ( step by step stuff ) i am looking to get books that teach me iron working, real home industrial working stuff.



smithing, farming, hunting, trapping, self defence, cooking, tool making, weapon smithing.



you get the idea, so if you know of really great instructional books that has no BS or fillers and just gets down to the nitty gritty would you post your suggestions on here? i only buy my books in physical form because what use are pdf's when the power is gone. I love reading and this is invaluable knowledge. and never gets outdated. it can make life really easy in a tough time.

searching for survival library

DIY test of preps. 24 and 48 hour.

I know there is always a question of how well we will handle a disaster, but we really can put our preparing to the test.



Some years ago I had a power surge that fried my breaker box, literally. It also burned wire in some walls and the house was over 70 years old. I went a month without electricity and at the time I had not prepared for having no shower or toilet, everything in the fridge that wasn't eaten fast enough spoiled and only a few things were eaten from the freezer. To top it off, I had to eventually move out so the repairs could be made for another 2 months. I bought a cheap RV and lived in that for the remaining time.

Since after several months the insurance company called me and said they don't cover power surges. In the end I never moved back in, I sold it.



Now, I had no generator for backup, nor did I have a long term plan where to live if the house did burn down. My prior experience of living in a camper gave me the idea of an RV. It was nice the RV had a generator and all the other goodies that made life easier.



A few years later I bought bare land and two days before the new year I moved onto it. In the middle of winter. The worst time to set up camp and try to stick it out till spring when I could start building.

I was in preparedness mode by this time and had a little of everything to make life more comfortable and much warmer. The wood stove is a life saver.



Now I have a house again and I built it with survival in mind. I can shut the generator off and run on battery power, but if I have no more gas I have solar. A wind generator is on standby just in case there are cloudy days.

Several times I have done the 48 hour test with no power at all, but I then had an experience in the middle of winter of having a bad controller and the generator also went bad. With 5 feet of snow and 25 miles to the nearest parts store, I was in survival mode.

It was using flashlights, candles, and cooking on a modified wood burning BBQ or the woodstove.

However, I had lots of canned and dried food and an endless supply of water from the spring or if it was froze that day, I melted snow.



I worked as much as I could at daylight on repairing the generator, at night I relaxed by candle light reading before bed. Reading a good enjoyable book is good for the mind. I did have a HAM radio to call out, but I never had to use it.



Are you setup to handle a simple power outage? Have you just flipped the main breaker and tried to see what it is like for 24 hours? 48 hours? Even just fot half a day? Granted you may have a freezer full you don't want to waste needlessly.



We can't really know what its like unless we test our skills and preps, our back up systems and make a list of things we missed.



Then there is the ultimate test, after a 48 hour test head to a camp ground and stay for a weekend and live off the supplies you threw in your car in a hurry. Sounds extreme, but isn't it really the ultimate test to see how well we are prepared?



How about those with families that are always going their own way, since one kids at a ball game, the daughter is out with her friends, the wife is out shopping and you were mowing the lawn. How fast could you throw supplies in the car and round up the family in an emergency? Cell phones may not work, now whats the plan?



If we don't put everything to the test, it will be a circus trying to figure it all out on a whim.



Maybe even the power outage is as far as some will try out, but its something to think about.

I made it from a strong net. I tied various shades of brown, green, earth tone cloth strips to it from old fishing/hunting shirts, jackets and stuff.



Strips can be untied or added and/or other natural cover added to mach a specific environment. Usually I just use it on “standard settings” for normal use. On my avatar I have it over my pack, when I put the pack on I tie it at the front to cover my body.



It doubles as a net when making fish traps. It can also be used as a spring loaded net-trap for animals.



It can also be used as a hunting hide, a child’s hammock or a bag.



It’s very light and rolls up tight. Because it’s a net it can be worn in different ways, over my pack and me, around my shoulders, over my head. The strips are useful for starting fires or for tying random things on camp, without needing to use/cut rope or to patch clothing and equipment.



My ghillie suit is primitive, but it does a very good job at hiding me in the bush even before I modify it. I feed birds in my garden with it on and they come eat the seeds around my feet and out my hands even landing on me. I have caught a few doves like this, but usually they react way too quickly for me, I just hope my neighbour has not seen any of this... who knows what he might be thinking:eek:

How do you turn dry corn into tortillas?

I picked up a few 50 lb bags of corn at Tractor Supply Company, to make tortillas. The recipes I've seen call for cooking and soaking the corn in lime water.



Then the instructions can get a little vague. Do I put the wet corn through my hand grinder? Maybe just a drip-dry for a few hours will be enough? Or would grinding first, liming later be okay. Or am I just missing a tortilla recipe that solves the problem?

Vietnam Era Soap for Camping/Survival

I have some soap that is apparently Vietnam era military surplus. I have quite a bit and I was wondering if it would be good camp soap or even survival soap. After all, it has been around fifty years or so and is still intact and looks good. It says on the label it is good for fresh or salt water, which is good. I'm absolutely sure it has no dye or fragrance, which is good. What I'm wondering is if it is environmentally friendly. Maybe some of the Vietnam vets on here know a little bit about this soap. I have a whole bunch of unwrapped cakes of the stuff, so I am thinking I can cut them into smaller bars that don't take up much room in the bag.

Infrared Binoculars?

Would these be useful at my bug out location? It is in the woods and awfully dark. I sometimes get spooked. I remember peering out into the darkness and seeing nothing when I thought I had heard something. I also recall a flash of stupidity which caused me to turn on the porch light. I was not only completely blind to anything eight feet past the light but I had also just announced myself. So I was wondering if there were some sort of binoculars that would help me see deer in the trees in the dark or maybe a bear or a person.

At one time, the "manmade and natural disasters" board was TOTALLY DOMINATED by the AGW whackadoodles and an incessant barrage "sky is falling" humans are causing skyrocketing global heating posts.



Since about July however suddenly nothing.

After actually using my gravity feed rocket stove, I realize what a pain in the rear bundling wood and dropping it down a 7 ft. tube can be.



To counteract that, I'm designing a hybrid between as wood gasification stove and rocket stove to get longer, cleaner burn times than a traditional wood stove. Here is my prototype, which can be used as a cookstove or even a hot water heater:

Looking at self healing targets.

I started looking at self healing targets. But I am worried what my 45 ACP or 7.62x39 would do to them. All the demo videos on the company's website are done with 22lr by the sound of the gun and they move around quite a bit. I am worried that larger guns will tear them apart quickly and send them flying all over the place. anyone ever shoot one of these in ether of those calibers?

Earthquake Lessons From Last Night

Last night I had the distinct pleasure of sitting atop a 6.0 earthquake. :eek:



There were definitely some things that I suddenly found I really wished I had thought of beforehand! When you're getting shaken like a martini in pitch blackness while everything you own crumbles around you it's a rather disorienting experience, even for a generally cool customer such as myself. Glad it was just a 6.0! I'll chalk this one up as a learning experience.







Note to self: Have some good boots and flashlight ready at both bedsides.



Some good clothing as well for if you have time for it. I pride myself in knowing the layout of my house so well I can traverse it in pitch black. Fat lot of good that did me. Everything had moved and there was broken glass seemingly everywhere. I still had a pistol handy, but it wasn't that kind of emergency! I had ended up on the floor over on the wrong side of the bed.



Note to self: Make BOB more easily accessible.



The coat closet by the front door was way too far to go for my BOB. Yes, 20ft was too damn far! I got my go bag over my shoulders in case I had to make a mad dash and then worried about getting the appropriate footwear. What good is it to survive the shake only to go out on a stupid wound immediately after the fact? The house was a disaster. One could have been seriously wounded trying to get through the wreck without good boots and a light.



Note to self: Headlamp!



I felt like an ass holding my compact flashlight in my teeth because my hands needed to be free to get ready and clear a path out. What if I dropped it? Get a headlamp.



Note to self: Got to be faster!



Okay, we were not the fastest ones to make it outside. What greeted us next drives home why we prepare...



Note to self: More water, more guns.



Almost everyone else in the neighborhood emerged in their nightclothes armed only with cell phones (which of course did not work). Okay, so our houses didn't fall down, but come on! Just about everything else did, including chunks of walls. Only one other couple emerged from their home with boots and bags on, carrying real flashlights. All of these people are my neighbors and my allies. In the short term my interests are closely intertwined with theirs. Later on, they may become my enemies as I might be seen as possibly having what they want/need, or maybe just because.



Note to self: Be a little less obvious.



Perhaps the fact that I had a camo bag with an axe hanging off it made me stick out a bit? It might have been appropriate where I used to live, but here it would be better if I look like a student rather than a redneck. I went ahead and purchased a high-quality pack with an internal hybrid frame that looks more like a plain college kid backpack today. I'm going to let it go that I emerged dressed with real footwear while most sported pajamas, but I can improve on the pack without compromising readiness.



Note to self: Better bug out vehicle.



Our homes sustained a good bit of damage. Many chose to leave. Wait, how much gas do I have? What if this had happened away from home? I need to make sure I improve the kit in my truck. Not just a walk home bag, but a walk away bag? Not to mention having the gas to get out to our relatively far away BOL if necessary. Also need to have an extra key made and hidden on the vehicle in case I do not make it out with keys.



Note to self: Improve bug in plan.



Our bug in supplies were stashed in the kitchen. Big mistake. That room was a war zone. It probably fared the worst. We could not access those things without considerable effort. Have a few stashes around the house. Battery powered lantern. Get one. Get more than one. I had lots of emergency candles we didn't use. Fire + aftershocks or leaking gas lines= crappy.









And an extra note:

I had the presence of mind to yank power cords out of the wall as we made our way out. Probably avoided a good fire in doing so, as many of the electronics were compromised in some way. Plan for this, maybe find a way to make it easier/faster.





The day after:

Most stores are closed. They all got trashed just like our homes. Price gouging is in full effect. Many are still without power or other resources. I heard every generator at the hardware store was bought up bright and early this morning. Didn't venture to the stores, but I'm sure the same goes for general supplies where they were available.

Newfies looking for survival group

Hello to all the newfoundlanders out there in Survivalist boards, I am looking for some people to make a long term survival group with. If your interested please keep this thread going.



Survival only happens when you take the right people and the right planning and work together. like it or not we are on an isolated island surrounded my wilderness and one road in and out, and if something happens that cuts us off from the outside world we are on our own and in danger.



what needs to happen is for us to stick together and fight to survive before we fight each other.

Feeling sad and let down (warning whine)

The only person I have to talk to about prepping, my sister, told me that she thinks I should stop prepping. She said it will all just go to waste and implied that I was wasting too much money on my little hobby. I told her I do rotate my food stock so that it was refreshed before going bad. However I just let the subject drop there. Trust me there is no arguing with my sister, not much verbal disagreeing with her either.



I have about 70 or so grocery store cans of food (for individual consumption)… soups , ravioli, beef stews, fruits, vegetables, etc. A couple of cans and packages of Mountain House meats, meals a few other Prep items and 2 55 gallon water barrels. For the most part I am prepping for my husband and myself however in a SHTF situation I have 17 other relatives down here that are definitely not prepping. They are my 3 sisters and their children and grandchildren. They are all on very fixed income and cannot afford prepping. I know this and do not mind putting up food for them. I would never turn away a family member come hell or high water. As you can though my supplies would not last long at all should they show up in a disaster. I still have a long long way to go before I am comfortable with my preps.



The only things that I can think might have caused this reaction from her is



1) Talked to my brotherin-law about teaching me how to garden (he is the only one I know who grow a garden) he was not very interested in teaching me though

2) I am hoping to put in a tornado shelter before next spring and told her I wish I could just build a large root cellar so I could store food and use it as a tornado shelter

3) Bought 10 cans of ravioli and spaghetti at Walmart at $1 a can and a few cans of soup



I will not stop prepping because she thinks I am foolish but it does make me sad. As I said before she was the only person I could talk to about it. My husband is accepting of it, as long as I don’t spend too much money eack week but not very interested. It also makes me feel as if maybe I am being foolish, after all I am 45 years old and have never been through any disaster that has left me unable to get to a fully stocked store within a few days (ice or snow storms). Then of course (or I would not be here lol) there is the other side of me that says YET. I just feel that it is a very good idea to have supplies on hand in case something should happen.



I don’t know I guess I am just whining about not having someone to talk to about prepping. Any support or encouragement would be appreciated. Thank you for reading this.

I KNOW the firearms industry is hurting.

That's why the $6 FAL mags, $8 P-mags, the sub $500 AR parts kits, the $350 gen 3 Glocks, and sub $300 S&W's.



But I'm talking people.



I just picked up a .357 Ruger Blackhawlk (4 5/8 for those who care) for $200

Now it had been hard used, and cera coated over the pitting, but it's perfectly functional.... (ill play with it awhile before i trade it for a boat or something) And it (and the guy I bought it from) weren't "gun collector" types. More "good old country boy"



Recently picked up a marlin model 60 for $50 under similar circumstances, and a Ruger standard (.22 pistol predating the MK2) with 4 mags for $156. (that's almost a $50 pistol!)



Didn't really want any of them, but they were too cheap to pass up, and someone will hit me up to find them the .22's at some point.



There's others, but those prices (and the people in particular) put me in that frame of mind.



Different from "us gun guys" who collect and trade like baseball cards....

I did not see this in a previous forum so I thought i would ask. I wanted to know if during a volcanic or super volcano eruption a gas mask would work if I had to leave for some reason. If so what kind of gas mask do you recommend? Also would a N95 mask work, or would i have to have something more heavy duty. If a gas mask will work, how many filters do you think I should get? Has anyone else seen this? I thought it was rather good.



It's a post-apocalyptic story with sci-fi elements. Essentially, scientists muck around with trying to cool down the planet and wind up accidentally causing an ice age. The last members of the human race are surviving on board a train (yes, a train) designed to be a self-sustaining ecosystem. The govt. style is, of course, a dictatorship. (What else would it be for plot purposes?)

Interesting story with this guy. Not that he can live in the woods of Maine for decades while stealing supplies, but that his presence could go undetected for so long. Pictures of his campsite look like it was pretty long term and not hard to miss if passing by. Just wondering if anyone from Maine knows the coordinates of this guys campsite? Is it really so secluded, yet within walking distance for weekly raids, that nobody could stumble across it after so many years? Looks like the police could get close enough to haul away truck loads of his supplies. Where exactly is this place?

It's a Good Day

Sat back with my family and watched the sun rise as we sat on the porch. Watered the garden, harvested some veggies, came back to the porch and my daughter brought out a jar of peanut butter. We all sat and ate kohlrabi and peanut butter. Sounds kinda gross, right? That's what I thought about peanut butter and onion sammiches, too. lol. . . It's awesome. . .No point, really. Just in a good mood this morning.



Anyways. . .Love it when the day starts this way. Makes us feel like we are already homesteading. quiet, birds chirpin', no sounds of civilization. Probably. . today, we'll go do some fishing and see if we can catch dinner.

After reading the recent thread on parboiled rice I learned a lot about rice. That got me interested in beans. So I searched around for a good thread on beans, which types store best, and of those which retain the most nutrients. I didn't find much (more due to search issues). So school me on beans. Which varieties store best? How should I store? Etc. I'm going to take what I learn in this thread and buy recommended varieties and cook some up to see what I like. Then add them to my preps.

I am new to canning. My first project (tomato sauce) turned out just fine. My last two projects (pickles and applesauce) have these crinkles on the lids. They seem to have sealed fine, but I am wondering if this is an issue and how I can prevent it.
