I screwed up, had a home invasion, OPSEC

Friday night I was home alone. The wife and kid were staying at a friends house for a birthday party so our car was gone. My truck had been borrowed by another friend so he could move some stuff. With no vehicles in my garage or driveway other than my work vehicle it made it appear that nobody was home. I live in rural Iowa in a town of about 200 people. Up until now, we had always left our house unlocked, keys in vehicles, etc. due to where we live. I have 2 dogs. 1 is a 100 lb yellow lab and 1 is a rat terrier. In an effort to keep our house cleaner we don't wear shoes inside. It was raining here Friday night

I went to bed about 11. I laid in bed for awhile watching tv. At about 1130 I heard a strange click come from the kitchen area. It was loud enough that it woke my lab who was sleeping on the bed at my feet. I looked at him and he was watching out the doorway with his ears cocked forward. He didn't growl or bark or anything so I didn't think to much about the noise. Both of my dogs normally bark at every little thing. If a car goes by or if somebody walks by on the street the dogs go nuts. Since the noise didn't make the dogs bark, I wasn't to concerned about it. I turned off the tv and went to bed

I woke up Saturday morning to start my day like any other. I went to the kitchen to make some coffee. When i entered my kitchen, I seen mud tracked all over the floor. The mud traveled from my side door which leads out tp my garage all the way through kitchen to the carpet that begins at my living room. It took me a couple seconds to realize why. My mind raced and my heart sank. I immediately strapped on my gun and began to search the house for anything missing or out of place. I called the cops and told them what happened. I also told them it was no hurry but for someone to stop by when in the area. As i waited, I went outside and walked around the house looking for shoe prints, cigarette butts, or anything out of place. I found a shoe print in a spot at the bottom of the stairs from my rear deck. This spot gets a lot of foot traffic and because of this the grass here is dead and gone. I could see some mud heading up the stairs to my rear sliding glass door which just happened to be locked. I glanced at my neighbor to the south who happened to be standing in his back yard. I walked over to tell him what happened.

Before I am able to say anything,he says to me, "my shed door is hanging wide open. I think somebody was rummaging through my shed last night." I then told him somebody was rummaging through my house last night. He couldn't find anything missing. I returned back to my yard

Then my neighbor to the north came outside. He lives alone and is roughly 90 years old with heart problems. I told him what had happened. He said, " now that you mention it I heard noises in my house last night too. I figured it was one of my kids stopping by to check on me and I didn't bother getting up. I called them this morning and they said they were not there."

When the cops arrived I and my neighbors filed a report. With nothing missing and the only evidence a shoe print and some tracked mud the cops didn't think anything would become of what took place

From here on out, all doors and vehicles will be locked. A loaded firearm will be on me or by me at all times. I am installing motion lights this afternoon.

What I assumed happened is somebody tried to come in through my back door, stepped in mud, and couldn't get in. Then they came in through my garage and side door. They came in and got as far as my living room before they heard my tv on and realized someone was home. They then left.

Its some freaky stuff. I couldn't sleep at all last night. I think both myself and my neighbors got pretty lucky. It could have been a lot worse. Even though I live in the boonies I will never again become complacent. This has shown me that I need to work on opsec. Up until now stuff like this just didn't happen around here.
