There are tons of "ultimate survival rifle" threads on here, so I thought I would offer a bit of a different perspective...
Here is my "survival rifle"
It is a bolt action glenfield model 25 in 22lr with a $50 simmons scope.
Why?
Because it was the one I bought and practice with.
I don't have money or own land (yet) so I went with what I could afford that I also happened to actually enjoy shooting and liked the look and feel of.
I shoot this rifle every week and collect ammo here and there when I find it.
Is it optimal for taking all kinds of game?
no
Is it the ideal weapon to have when attacked by armed men?
nope
But one thing I do know is that I can hit a soda can out to 100 yards almost every single time. I know this because I PRACTICE and I practice because I really enjoy and am proud to own the firearm that I currently own.
If need be I can use it to get a dove or wild turkey or squirrel or rabbit or even a deer if I happen to see one.
If somebody messes with me they will have to contend with an unidentifiable (to them) rifle pointed at their head....in the event that I do have to shoot, it WILL severely hurt them because I have the skills to hit what I am aiming at.
My point it is that whatever you happen to choose as your rifle should be one that you actually really like to practice with. It will also be very dependent on your situation. If you are a broke kid in his 20s that lives out of a camper and moves around your choice will be different than someone who owns property has a family and therefore has much more to defend.
I do not envision mowing down an invading army or band of marauders....such a circumstance is absurdly unlikely...even in a real shtf scenario.
Whatever you choose, I believe the most important factors are A. being able to hit what you are shooting at and B. Being able to afford and carry a whole lot of ammo for whatever you have.
Just my thoughts!
(on a side note, my next purchase will be a ruger 22/45 to be a more portable tool that shoots the same ammo)
