Question for the other LEO'S on here.

Are you considering a career change?

This is the first job that I've had that I don't actually hate going to work. I've been in LE for more than a year now and have developed a pretty good reputation in my department. That being said. I have a baby on the way and my wife has already mentioned the fact that she wants me out of it.

My department is a busy one (I personally answered over 200 CFS last month)and across the board it has some of the best people I have had the pleasure of calling my brother/sister.

I've considered trying for smaller departments but I like being busy (I purposefully picked the busiest shift in the busiest precinct) and I don't know if I'm ready for a smaller department.

I don't have any clue what I would do if I got out of LE all together either.

UV-82 HP Initial Review

Just got in a latest Baofeng radio to test out, the UV-82 HP. So far I like it quite a bit, and copying my UV-5R setup over was a breeze using chirp with the Export and Import feature using CSV (excel) files. Only does the channel listings this way so the settings stay as they should for that radio model.

I haven't tested the transmit capability to compare it to a 5R, but I will say that the receive compared side by side to a classic UV-5R seems to be a little better. A little less static and noise going on with the channels that come in the best local to me, including the NOAA broadcasts and my local all county fire department calls.

The Dual Watch (Listen to A and B channel banks essentially at the same time for transmission) feature works very well, I could see that really coming in handy for monitoring two separate networks or groups you may have an interest in a SHTF type scenario. You can select which bank, A or B, to broadcast on too using the top of the PTT button and the bottom to make it a quick change in frequencies you talk on.

Build quality seems about the same as the 5R. I have to get used to where the zero and scan buttons are, since it's in a proper place on the 82 compared to on the right side of the 5R. FM receive is also good, with the factory external speaker being noticeably louder than the 5R.

My one real complaint is that the charging base ins't the same as the 5R. This means the USB charger I got for use with the 5R that I can plug into a portable battery won't work on the 82, So i'll have to rig it or find another one built for it. A shame but I can still rig up a 9V charge solution if I really had to.

Once I get my ticket I'll be working the transmit functions to see how they stack up, but the evidence is telling me it's well worth the extra pennies to go with the 82 HP over the 5R for overall range and reception.

You really like Fox news?

As a regular patriotic, Constitution loving American is it asking too much to have a real, un-bias news source?

I've tried watching msnbc, cnn, etc. simply in an attempt to listen to the other side. However, their spin on things drives me friggin' insane.

Over the last couple of years I watch Fox less and less. They repeat the same message and the rest of the time they're talking over each other while being "Fair and Balanced".

Tonight was probably the last straw. I woke up from a little nap and O'Reilly was on. In his little monologue he was actually blaming Trump because the only thing the media is talking about is Trump. HUH:confused: The media is blaming the media because Trump is dominating everyone's air time. O'Reilly....you tool....if you really believe that and think it's a problem then why are you spending another segment talking about Trump????? His point was that Trump was actually helping the democrats because everyone is spending their time talking about what Trump is saying/doing instead of talking about how bad Obama has done.

Short Term Bug Out Advice Needed (Hospital)

I work in a ER and am required to be there before/during hurricanes. Normally this is no big deal as I've done it for 18+ years now. But this is the first time they are requiring us to provide our own essentials, like food, bottled water, bedding, etc etc.

I prep at home but that's for a SHTF scenario w/o electricity or running water. I don't think they'll like me starting a fire and re-hydrating my food.

I have some ideas, please add yours as well.

Bedding:

Folding cot, sleeping bag, pillow

Water:

Tap water (i don't think they'll restrict this)

Food:

All lives matter? What's your take on this NPR spin article.

Thought this might deserve some attention. Clearly this in of its self has a bias and blame/victim POV written into it.. I though it was worth sharing.. I didn't look into the circumstances of the shooting much. Just know he was unarmed and being arrested on drug charges.

Transgender Protest Hillsboro Mo

http://ift.tt/1JsBY50

Just got a hit on Twitter about a Protest taking place in Hillsboro Missouri.
Aparently the students of Hillsboro High School are protesting a "Transgender" 18 year old male student being allowed to use the Girls Locker and Restroom Facilites in the High School.

Finally some commen sense out there.
Great Job Hillsboro High school students

The Fox2News link is what the students are protesting against.

AND for the record the students are not protesting the "Transgender" student just his "right" to use the girls locker room.

Bear Gryll's Ultimate Survival Knife

My son's friend took his above mentioned knife in the woods with is this weekend, along with the BG Parang. (I was impressed with the chopping power of the parang)
So he decided to Baton the Ultimate Survival into this soft green bay tree. I had my back turned, on the other side of the small creek setting a snare, and heard 4 light hits from a baton stick, my son laugh, while his friend let out some "Sentence Enhancers". He also said he was getting rid of all of his knives, except for his PMoore TRex, Mora Companion,& Buck 119..Here is the only pic I took. Attachment 103269

Question: Mylar Bags and Spice Packets

You know those little paper-like packets that have taco, onion, chili and other seasonings in them? What do you think about storing them long-term?

I plan to put 5 packets, each a different seasoning, in Mylar bags with an oxygen absorber. Do you think I should let the packets be or cut little holes in them so the oxygen will all get sucked out?

Or maybe, is there a better way that I'm not thinking of? These are just meant to go on top of 5-gallon buckets full of beans and such. Give some variety to the stored staples...

Marlin 795

OK I've been on here 2-3 years, have around 50 posts so take that for what its worth I dont say much LOL.. However I do think this cheap little flimsy looking .22 needs to be mentioned,I've owned 3 10-22's and didnt like any of them!! not accurate out of box, multiple FTE,FTF's ect. Like I said owned :D: I picked up a 795 thursday, tore it down cleaned fileings out lubed it up and have shot the crap out of it the last 3 days, not a single FTE, 2 FTF's but rim was hit well and turning cartridge and trying again still didnt fire round,( cant blame a cheap gun for crappy ammo LOL) on top of feeding every thing I've shoved in mag,it will shoot way better then a 10-22 a 3\8 10 round group at 25 yds is normal even with mixed rounds,POI doesnt change with differant brands  now maybe my luck with 10-22's just sucks and I rolled a 7 with the 795 :headshake: I honestly dont know,I will say if someone held out a 795 in one hand a 10-22 in the other I'd grab that 795 without any thought on the price differance..

PS.. Just in case your wondering I am a huge Ruger fan,I have 11 rugers in house 8 are mine 3 belong to my kids, I just dont care for the 10-22 for what it costs and performance for cost...

M1A socom II or a 2015 loaded?

Hi everyone!

I'm about to pull the trigger on a m1a but having second thoughts on which model. I have a deposit on a socom II extended rail which is kinda rare to find new these days. I've wanted this gun for some time (over 5 years) and now i'm days away from getting it.

My problem is the new loaded model caught my eye and now I'm having second thoughts.

I know they are built for diffrent missions but would like to hear your thoughts.

What do you guys suggest?

Reevaluating Practical Uses of Fireams: Opinions?

I enjoy firearms and prepping as much as most of you, and for a while I was pretty set on saving up for an AR-15, but I'm starting to reconsider not just buying an AR but buying any sort of combat rifle. While I would still love to own an AR for personal reasons, here is why:

1) In any sort of SHTF scenario where the government is still around, carrying around a gun in public (especially a long gun) will probably be discouraged or even made illegal under martial law. Law enforcement or the National Guard might very well confiscate firearms, or arrest people for carrying them. If things get bad and people are hungry, I really can't see official peace keepers being OK with civilians carrying weapons in public. If I'm staying home, then a shotgun seems like a logical choice. This kind of relates to another dilemma, that I live in a densely populated area and don't have a solid BOL nearby. I would feel much safer inside my house (that has a well) where I can hide than I would camping in the mountains, where I would basically be a sitting duck inside my tent.

2) If the above scenario doesn't apply, I'm concerned that something like an AR would be so desirable and stand out so much that it would make me a target. An AR is only of use to me if I can avoid being shot in the first place, and people who want what's not theirs will probably plan to go unseen until it's too late. Having a large group or defensible structure would help with this, but that's something I won't have if I go anywhere.

3) If I'm on the move, then what I can carry is very limited, and if I'm on foot, then I can only carry one long gun. This limitation is compounded by ammo. If I'm driving somewhere and living out of my BOV, then I can have a few, but if gas stations are open, scenario 1 is probably in effect. Is 223 a good compromise between hunting and defense? I'm hesitant to rely on a shotgun simply because ammo is so bulky, and a scoped gun seems limiting when fast target acquisition is necessary, so maybe my 30-30 lever gun would be a good choice? Should I call a handgun and a shotgun good enough and just focus on other preps? I'll admit, firearms are a bit of a hobby of mine, so I probably spend more time thinking about them than would seem logical

I'm sorry if this has been brought up before, but I'm really not sure what to think about all of it. I definitely need to come up with some sort of emergency plan that doesn't involve driving 800 miles to my nearest relative's house, or driving as far as I need to and finding a motel, but I just don't feel safe disappearing into the woods when plenty of other armed people will probably be doing just that. If I had to bail out, I would probably drive as far as I could and try to find a hotel or camp. If it's TEOTWAWKI, and staying put wasn't an option, then I still honestly don't know what my best option is. Am I just screwed if I have to bail out and don't have a large group? What would you do in my situation?

Any Howard Phillips Lovecraft Fans Here?

I've always been a bibliophile, but just barely got around to H.P. Lovecraft.
I was a Poe fan back in 91', and had all his stuff.
I've often known of the C'thulhu Mythos but never read Lovecraft til' now.
I'm obsessed to say the least, and have found such sublime vistas and genuine vindications in the stories.
It is as if I have finally found something that I did not even know I was looking for.
Anyway, I've found it now, so the only road is forward.:thumb:

Anyway to Actually Reinforce Apartment During TEOTWAWKI So No One Can Break In

Camper at remote hunt club as BOL?

Fiance was a member for many years at a remote 4,000 acre hunt club, with about 40-ish people, the vast majority of whom he has known for years. There are about a dozen old hunting campers there year round.

The area is about 90 minutes drive from any major city, about 4 hours inland from our primary residence on the coast of the Carolinas. At the hunt club, once you leave paved roads, it's a couple of miles of 4wd dirt roads with a couple of locked gates. It would be a very difficult place to just happen across if you didn't already know it was there, and without a 4wd vehicle you aren't making it in easily, either. It's a foothills/semi-mountainous region. Water wouldn't be a problem there, nor would firewood.

Our primary plan is to bug in, and resources don't currently allow for purchase of a separate property or building a bug out lodge. I'm pondering the usefulness of a hunt club membership and a camper as a potential bug out site. Any thoughts?

We need another peeing match!

The quickest and surest way to start a word feud is to discuss race, religion or politics in any group. It is not my intention to start a feud but would enjoy a opinion based civil discussion among my friends here. Can't remember due to senility which great patriot said the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of patriots from time to time. Sounds wise and makes sense to me. With that said I don't believe our country is totally able and/or committed enough to fight a combat operation like the country of Israel has since the late 40's.

Using politics and religion as your theme am I wrong? I had the privilege to serve with members of the Israel Defense military forces and civilian forces. I had the honor to train with these forces since my military time and civilian forces since my military service as a LEO. It must be established that full time and part time militia service in Israel is two separate entities. It is Israel's position that giving up a square inch of land is akin to treason. Our great country has given up other nations land since 1816. Do we have what is needed to stop that and actually fight a combat operation for survival??

I'm a bit confused on the licensing of the four main services

Greetings,
I'm a bit confused on the licensing of the various two-way radio communications services.

As I currently understand them:

1) Ham radio = requires passing a test in order to obtain a license (the fee is nominal and insignificant).
2) CB radio = is governed by something called license by rule (not sure what that means exactly in plain English), and requires NO license, however it used to require a license when it first started back in the early post WWII war years
3) FRS = requires NO license
4) GMRS = kind of currently in a state of flux right now, thus it's somewhat hard to pin down, but from what I currently understand it went from requiring a $85 fee to now requiring only a $60 fee for a license... however, from what I've been learning from researching, the licensing of this service is largely being ignored and most people are just using it without a license at all. There was a petition filed to the FCC to do away with the licensing altogether but it fell through.
5) MURS = requires NO license

Thank you

A gun that's reliable even when it's dirty!

I got thinking about this today. In a SHTF situation, if your lucky or prepared enough to have a weapon, especially if you have been displaced or must leave in a hurry, you most likely won't have a cleaning kit.

My thought is to give people a list of weapons, especially pistols that will fire under the worst of conditions.

The reality is, you could be stuck in snow, rain, mudslide, dust storm, building collapse etc. etc. your weapon will get dirty. Will it still fire? Can you depend on it?

Generator hut, fuel storage, safety

I have lots of remnants of Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) left over from my off-grid house-building project last summer. I'm thinking of using them to build a small shed or hut. In the hut I would want to put a portable generator. I'd need to store fuel for it. (It will likely be a gasoline-fueled generator). I'd like to store the gas in 5-gallon cans in the hut with the generator. I would probably want to keep a gasoline-fueled snowblower in there, too. And I might want to heat the hut with a ventless propane-fueled wall heater.

The hut would have some kind of vent or a window.

In terms of safety, am I asking for trouble if I move forward with this plan?
