Where and how do you store bread?

Default Where and how do you store bread?

I just mentioned not to store bread in fridge and advise was adamantly rejected. When i was a kid we had a bread box, small microwave sized vented metal box. Havent seen one since the 60s. How do you keep bread? In plastic bag? Keep homemade and store bread the same way? How does your bread go bad, moldy or dry and stale?

My wife went to a meeting...

For 15 years I had a consulting and sales job that kept me in hotels 100-120 days a year, and nearly a million flight miles. Most of that time was when my kids were in elementary, JH and HS.... I was pretty close to all of them, 'cause when Dad was home we played hard and spent time as a family. I think we had more time together than some families that were together all the time.

Anyway, once I started my own company, we just started as empty-nesters. It put me in a home office nearly all of the time and my flight miles and hotels ceased to exist. The wife is a Public School Administrator, so she goes into work.

But.... we now HATE being apart. I had to leave on a 5 day trip recently, after not traveling for about 5 months and it felt like an eternity being away from her.

I guess what I am saying in regard to the advice and examples above.... not every couple is the same. Each couple has to find their happy place. Now that we are far past half our lives, we desire to be with each other all the time.

New England Drivers- I don't understand

We're getting snow. It isn't that cold so the snow is melting and causing ice on the road. Time to take it easy you may think. But an accident right down from me says different. Traffic is moving slowly in front of my house so I thought it may be fun to see what happened.

So I walked down the street. Seems a SUV type cross over thought they could drive as fast as they normally do and jetted into the other lane and hit head on with a car (that was probably driving according to conditions). And this in The NE and we know what snow means in most ways.

The snow is falling and melting on the street and freezing so there are icily spots. I had a problem even walking down there. Seems to me, your car has problems, you slow down. Not for that driver obviously. She had places to be and drove accordingly. Sucks to be her now. Stupid people drive me crazy.

Nebraska expands Medicaid--"There's lots of rich people who can pay for it"

There was an initiative on the Nebraska ballot for the November election, to expand the state's Medicaid program.

To my surprise, it actually passed. Given that Nebraska is such a Red state.

The push for the expansion came from the Blue enclaves of metro Omaha and Lincoln. Who voted nearly 70% in favor.

Outstate areas voted overwhelmingly against.

The governor pointed out--that in the 1980's Medicaid took up about 8% of the state budget.

It has since ballooned to 25% of the state's budget. And the governor says that this voted-in expansion will increase it even more. And probably require a tax increase.

I was talking to an uber-liberal relative (my sister-in-law, a 20-something recent college grad), pointing out the above fact. I also mentioned that Nebraska has a 2.8% unemployment rate. And that there is no excuse not to find a job that has health insurance.

I also mentioned how badly we need infrastructure improvements, and the EXTREMELY high property tax burden that homeowners, small businesses, and farmers have to pay. (Nebraska is 3rd highest in the nation for property taxes).

She gave a very revealing answer, which I think illustrated perfectly the mind-set of your typical urban millennial liberal:

"There's plenty of rich people in the state, who can afford to pay more taxes!!!"

Three lessons I've learned from all this:

1) Young millennials today think that, if you have wealth or money, you are OBLIGATED to "share" for the "greater good of society".

2) Our metro areas are filled with raving Bernie-type socialist believers. Who advocate a radical "share-the-wealth" philosophy.

3) Even in supposedly "red" states, the "blue" metro city enclaves can outvote the rest of the state.

What do others think? Thoughts? Opinions?

Zero distance, 36yrd zero.

Default

Close Range Zero is a good way to get in a ballpark. But there are too many variables to trust without verification. The concept is that a bullet crosses the line of sight twice, so zeroing at xx yards or meters would also be zeroed at xxx yards or meters. Too, it is much easier to zero up close accurately but even there, small errors grow to large errors at distance. Sight height, BC and velocity all can make the xx zero problematic at distance. So the final part should always be confirmation of the expected xxx zero.

Why against Islam

We should guard against any group with a history of trying to kill us, and be prepared to meet force with force.

Islam has a long history of trying to kill all non believers, including recent attempts to kill Christians, and Americans. We would be stupid to assume they have changed any.
Specific Islamic groups, including terrorist groups, and several world leaders, have killed Americans and attempted to control our actions. They have publicly declared war upon us.

In my opinion, it's time to take them at their word, and give them what they have asked for.
To quote Rouster Cogburn, fill your hands you son of a bitch.

Help me make a "Life Experiences" game

At Christmastime my family plays games instead of exchanging gifts. I'm always on the look-out for new ones.

I recently saw a "Life Experiences Bingo" game that seems like it would be fun -- the only problem is that it was designed for an Adult Sunday School class, so it listed experiences like: "I can name all 12 Apostles", "I can recite Psalm 23", and "I have witnessed to a stranger". While I think these are worthy, they don't exactly fit most of my family.

I have tried to think of some replacement experiences, but the things I come up with are all things that I have done -- I need some ideas that I haven't done myself.

We will have 15-20 people playing the game, and they are between the ages of 20 and 85. Can you guys help me come up with some family-appropriate "Life Experiences" to use?

Here are some of the ones I've got so far:

I can rub my stomach and pat my head at the same time.
I can speak a foreign language.
I can whistle through my fingers.
I can wiggle my ears.
I know how to play a musical instrument.
I can cross my eyes.
I’ve baked homemade bread before.
I’ve fainted or thrown up in public.
I've ridden on a motorcycle.
My picture has been printed in a newspaper.
I've milked a cow (or goat) with my own two hands.
I've gotten a ticket for speeding or for parking illegally.
I know how to play chess.
I've played an actual game of tennis or golf.
I've been the patient in an ambulance.
I've slept in a tent.
I've started a fire without matches or a lighter.
I've had more than 3 pets at one time.

Hello from Lawn Guyland(NY)

First post here. Found this forum a while back, but didn't get around to registering till today. I've been hanging out at another prepper-type forum
for years, but the number of active posters has really dwindled there. I do a LOT of posting there, but lately, feel like I'm talking to myself, yanno? This forum looks to be far more active, so I'll probably start spending more time here.

Study Says Trump Supporters Are Wimps With Small Penises

Oh, the looney leftist media. And the MSM wonders why they get called Fake News. Can you even MAKE UP stuff like this?

Someone did a study and found that areas that supported Trump in 2016 also had lots of google searches for “erectile dysfunction” and also apparently for "what can I do about my small penis".

And these geniuses draw a conclusion:

Quote:

But our research suggests that Trump is not necessarily attracting male supporters who are as confidently masculine as the president presents himself to be. Instead, Trump appears to appeal more to men who are secretly insecure about their manhood. We call this the “fragile masculinity hypothesis.”
And a main stream paper published this article - the Washington Post. The actual article is behind a paywall but I saw it on Twitchy.

Schmidt & Bender Year End Sale

hackers stealing all your money

Some friends of ours in their early 60s are pretty tech savvy. They made their money a long time ago and havent really had to work in a long time.

They kept their investments with multiple brokerages to diversify risk.

Last year hackers went into all their accounts and stole *all* of their money and transferred to accounts in brazil.

I recommend that you use two factor authentication on all accounts. I keep minimal money in my checking account that I use as a debit card that has simple authentication.

The hackers are hacking cell phones which receive two factor authentication messages, so the only one I trust is RSA secure ID token devices.

Hackers hack emails so they can trigger account password resets.

Instead of immediately damaging a compromised machine, they are monitoring it for months until they have enough information to take everything.

A friend went to russia on a work trip, her husband gave her a clean laptop with barely anything on it. He said do not access any of your accounts while in russia.

If you connect to public wifi in an airport your computer and phone can be hacked in about 5 seconds and password loggers installed.

This is very scary and is a huge wakeup call.

GM _ Michigan _ Democrats _ Idiots

GM closing 4 plants or is it 5? I have heard both. What this says is how poorly GM is/has been managed. Surely they knew a year or two maybe during the Obama administration one or more of these plants should be closed. Why all now?

My guess is to cover up problems.

Finally midterm results_ I think

The final numbers are in. The Republicans lost -33 House Seats and added +2 Senate Seats. A weighted average giving each House Seat a value of 1 and each Senate Seat a value of 4.35 the Republicans lost a weighted average of -24.3 seats. (435 House seats and 100 Senate seats)

Taking all the modern midterm elections starting with the Eisenhower administration the average number of seats lost by the majority party, the average was -23.6 in the House and -3.4 in the Senate with a weighted average of -38.578 seats.

Such an average is not statistically exact. So if one calculates the average accuracy to a probability of 95% the means fall between an accuracy range. These ranges are losing between -35.43 seats to -11.77 seats in the House. The range is losing -5.798 to -1.002 seat in the Senate. This works out to a weighted range from -44.07 to -4.53.

In conclusion the Republicans lost what was historically expected in the House. However with a gain of 2 in the Senate, the Republicans can be said to have had a mild-wave win in the Senate. The net weighted House and Senate change can be said to be pretty much center up on the expected turnover range for Congress in a modern midterm election.

NO BLUE WAVE AND BETTER THAN COULD BE EXPECTED IN THE SENATE.

What's the best deal right now on a bucket of freeze dried food?

This will be the first Christmas since my kids have moved out, and they both live in tiny apartments and barely get by with their bills. I'd like to get them a little emergency food for just-in-case. Maybe 3-4 days to a week worth each.

They don't have a lot of room either, so freeze dried would be best.

What are the best deals right now? I see the Augson Farms are 21k calories for less than 50 bucks. Anything better than that? I don't NEED to buy a prepackaged "bucket", but the price-per-calorie does seem to be better.

This Odd Folding Grip-Pump Shotgun Sold for $20,700

Here’s one you don’t see every day… which might be one reason for its whopping price tag of $20,700 when it sold back in 2015. Another reason you don’t find these often is that it’s a pump (or slide) action shotgun which doesn’t use the gun’s forearm to operate the action. Yeah, that’s right. As[.....]

Disposable thermometers?

Disposables tend to be chemical-based rather than liquid (mercury or alcohol) and can be affected by temp extremes over time, not to mention moisture.

Newer liquid column thermometers do not have mercury in them but rather alcohol, just as an FYI. I still have a few dozen merc thermometers around because I could get them cheap at the time and they are durable and accurate, though a pain at 5 minutes roasting time required for an accurate reading. But they can also be used for rectal temps, something you can't get with a paper strip thermometer.

In my experience the digital thermometers last several years of intermittent use. At $5 each I can afford to toss one every few years. I do recommend that you have at least one for everybody to avoid cross-contamination, or otherwise make religious use of cover sheaths. Those tend to come on boxes of 100 or more. The plastic wrap style seems to work well and is by far the cheapest.

GM Plant closings and Layoffs

Maybe I am getting to cynical as I age, but does it strike anyone else as odd that GM does this the month before Christmas?

I wonder if this is not a roundabout way to pressure Trump to drop his tariffs on Chinese made parts and materials. I know there are many factors at play, but the timing is just odd to me. I own one GM vehicle that I bought used. It is an S-10 that is 21 years old and has been well cared for. I have not and will not buy another GM product because I simply do not care for the company. I got the truck at a good price when I needed it, and I have kept it. We normally drive Ford or Honda vehicles.

How Do You Store Ammo?

.

Store it in a cool, DRY place & will last a LOT longer than you. If you are really worried, put it in ammo cans, with some desiccant packs. There are lots of other options depending how much you want to store in one spot. People store 22LR in used water bottles, I use a few peanut butter jars for just a few boxes of 22, the bulk of my 22 is either in ammo cans or sitting on the shelf. If you want to store more, or bigger calibers & don't want to buy ammo cans, use a pail of some sort. They also make a ton of different size bags of varying strength. The stuff I store in cans for long terms storage I also seal in a vacuum seal bag, but that's just me. You can also buy some of the nice ammo boxes for 22 just like they have for larger calibers, I got a couple that hold 100 rounds each, just more to see if they were any good. You are really only limited by your imagination & budget, but it doesn't cost a lot to use resources that you would otherwise throw away, like buckets & pails. A few extra bags & some desiccant packs aren't that much either. Main thing is to keep it dry & away from extreme temperatures & large temperature swings.

.

I don't agree with this guy about keeping ammo as a barter item, but that has nothing to do with proper storage.

Initiative Q - A new way to pay

Initiative Q is an attempt by ex-PayPal employees to create a new payment system instead of credit cards, which were designed in the 1950's. The system uses its own currency, the Q, and to get people to start using the system once it is ready, they're allocating Qs for free to people that sign up now (the amount of Qs drops as more people join).

Signing up is free and they only ask for your name and an email address. Since it costs you nothing, there is nothing to lose - but if this payment system becomes a world wide payment method, your Qs could be worth a lot. If you missed getting bitcoin years ago, you might not want to miss this...

Minimizing smoke from fire to keep a low profile

...Search-up 'Dakota fire holes'.. (recommend 'DuckDuckGo', google is the Devil.. Technique works very well for small, hot cooking fires with low smoke...

..But for larger, 'warmth fires', yes, choose well-dried hardwoods, wherever possible.. 'Sappy' / wet woods (ie: Pines..) will smoke more, but even so, there will be Only so-much you Can 'attenuate'..

..One idea we have for the 'Inner core area' of our BOL, is rigging up a Large 'tented canopy', where, just like a 'circus tent', there's a Center peak, and lower, stretched out sides, and the 'pitch' is quite steep (to help prevent snow-load / rain buildup, etc..) It's of a very heavy-duty Mil-grade multi-layer canvas material, that's (purportedly..) both radar / IR-imager dampening, and flame-resistant, but it will also be up High enough, for the 'ceiling' to be Well away from flame-tops...

...And the concept is, to help 'disperse' the smoke over a wider-area (ie: this canopy is 36' x 40' - pretty big area...) so the smoke-rising is not so 'columnar'... Yes, we'll 'have to be careful', etc, but with Open sides / plenty of airflow, not expecting spark-accumulations to really be an issue (again, it's flame-resistant, And the 'pitch' will be fairly steep...)

..Also plan to use 2-3 large, 'bowed' sheets of tin (like 4' x 8'...) with supports, creating a curved-wall 'heat reflector' behind the fire-pit area, so it 'reflects' the heat towards the sitting / cooking area - which means we Should be able to get away with Smaller more 'compact' fires (less smoke...)...

..Just some ideas, Fwiw..

Last Ammo Scare

I am in the process of choosing a bolt gun. It will be mostly used for range fun, but also deer hunting every couple years. I've narrowed the caliber down to 270, 308, or 30-06. I know the 3 are ballistically very similar, so I'm looking at a different parameter.

How were the stores last ammo scare with stocking those 3 calibers? I didn't have a hunting type gun last scare, so didn't watch, but I know the ammo was still around. Did 30-06 vanish or was it still abundant? 308 is very popular, and a military round, did it vanish like 223? 270 was never a military round, was it totally ignored in the buy up?

Thanks
