Though for those who aren't interested/inclined to prepping [i.e. you wouldn't get them a Wise House Bucket] I have found real life, as they see it, practical works well.
ANY car prep emergency kit that you can find everywhere. Or separate parts if I know what they got; From air pumps [with lights] to battery chargers, tire fixers bottles. Those coffee holder things with a plug to the cigerette lighter to keep things warm. [do they still make them?]. Send Help signs/cones/flares. Those small coolers for cans to keep things cold [great hurricane prep for someone who won't bother otherwise].
I've even made up 'keep your car pretty kits' with a bucket, some shammies, a spray bottle, a full jug of water [to wash yourself with], soaps, waxes, sponges, brushes.
ANY first aid kit, be it for a car or a house [Mothers like them, esp. if you tape some specialiaty bandaids their kids would like to it].
For Seniors I've given those battery storage 'night lights' that plug in. Handy, you have to make sure you find an outlet they can reach and set it up for them. The ones with removable flash lights are extra useful. [Opening a flash light and getting the batteries in the right way can become difficult after a point]. [Hey, I've know people who had to use the 'clapper' because their fingers couldn't handle the little twist knob of lamps.] Now, I've found those power strips work well, too, as they can handle the toggle.
Little kids -- say up to 5, a new backpack [the one bought for back to school is getting ratty and if it isn't, well, there isn't anything wrong with one for school and one for going other places]. Themed ones they love. Make sure it has a water bottle [or a place to put one, and then buy one to fit]. You can fill it with stuff too -- think stocking stuffers, some toys, candy, extra socks [because you are their great aunt after all and what if their socks get wet?], a kid's first aid kit, cheap plastic kids rain cloak, a hat, gloves, whatever your climate is; down here you can stuff them with beach toys]. Yes, the candy will be eaten, the first aid kit played with and everything else will end up everywhere else, but it is a good pattern to start. And is useful.
Kid's older than 5 you have to consider the child more. If you are the 'practical' one in the family you can just call mom/dad and ask if the kid needs a new rain coat, wind breaker, themed underwear. If the kid is showing an interest in nature get some simple binoculars and a bird id book. Interested in bugs, magnifying glass, net, something to hold the bugs in, and a book about their favorite type of bugs or an id book. The kid wants to grow violets [or whatever] some pots, soil and everything they will need. Other than that, books are great. If the kid is into scouts, of course, you are set.
