what if the purge was real?

Almost everyone who has seen these movies has wondered what if the purge was real. If you haven't seen the movies here the least you need to know

1. for 12 hours every year all crime including murder is legal
2. the only things that are off limits are using weapons that are higher than "class four" or harming government officials with a "ranking ten"

I tried using search to find if this question had been asked before and if it was i wasn't able to locate the thread. But I am wondering what you would do if the purge was real and how it would affect society as a whole.

As for me I would probably join some militia and protect my community from people looking to come in and cause havoc.

as for society at large it would probably effect the way we behave year round. People would be a lot more polite and less trustworthy of one another. Our economy would get a huge boast year round then crash once the purge happened. There also a number of questions regarding the law about the purge and other aspects of society such as.

1. if someone steals a car in the purge and still has it afterwards is that possession of stolen property?
2. Who is watching the prisons?
3. if an illegal immigrant crosses the border during the purge are they now legal residents?
4. If someone shot during the purge dies afterwards is the person in question guilty of murder?

Personally i don't think society could sustain the purge even with the huge economic rise with security systems, gun sales and so on.
