Hemp

Well, unless they're stoned some folks might not mistake industrial hemp for pot as the leaves are different. They're not serrated. It's a Crotolaria (Sunn Hemp), not a Cannabis. But it's close enough from a distance that it might make someone go "Hmmmm..." and stop just to take a closer look.

The stems are very tough once the plant gets beyond 5' tall, which is why this industrial hemp is used as a source of fiber. Good article with photo:

It says Sunn hemp can get 6-10' tall with stems 1-2" thick. If the highway department cuts it down it could clog the ditch. LOTS of biomass. I cut mine at 5' with 1/2" thick stems and although I chopped the stems up before tilling in, there are a lot of pieces still there as they didn't decompose much.

Southern Exposure sells it. That pack has a LOT of seed in it and mine germinated almost 100%.

I grew it in a raised bed last summer to test it's supposed nematicidal properties. That bed got fall carrots planted and they're still there so I don't know as nematodes aren't active yet.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
