cash vs. gift card in mail?

Hate to say it,but Christmas is coming.
Have too many grandkids to remember thier names,let alone sizes or what they are "into".

Wal-mart seemed like a good idea ,but started to think if there was a "universal" gift card that can be used anywhere.That led me to think about just cash,and they can do what they want.

I guess if somehow the cash gets stolen,it would be just as easy to steal the gift card,Right?Aren't they activated when you buy them,and anyone could use it?
