Farming: Own industry vs. private garden?

I'm a computer geek but eventually I will want to make sure I live out on my own farm. I'm well aware that farming can be tough when SHTF (lack of tractor fuel, fertilizers, difficult to hide from bandits, droughts, wild fires etc), but I would like to have a house on a farm with the farm being one of several life lines.

So I was thinking, should I try to become rich enough that I can buy an actual farm industry, or try for a more private organic-style garden farm?

On the one hand I see the garden option of sounding nicer and having more variety, as well as being easier to keep low profile.
On the other hand I think volume is crucial for SHTF, and perhaps industrial way way outvolumes an organic garden style.
