The effectiveness of barbed wire in a SHTF--opinions from a farmer

As a lifetime farmer, I've raised livestock for years. I've also had to do extensive fencing of pastures, and have done a lot of work with barbed wire.

I haven't seen this topic discussed much on SB, but was wondering if members were aware of the effectiveness of barbed wire. Particularly in perimeter defense.

Let me tell 'ya---barbed wire is WICKED stuff! Imagine the worst thorns you have run into. Grabbing your clothes and scratching and lacerating your skin.

Now turn those thorns into steel, and you've got something really nasty.

Barbed wire usually comes in 1/4 mile rolls. Turn this roll on its side, and unroll it accordion-fashion around your home, just on top of the ground. In the dark, especially, you wouldn't want to accidentally walk into it.

It would be a great way to QUICKLY put up a perimeter defense. Without too much work.

Which is why I keep four rolls in the barn.

I've found the best wire is "Gaucho" brand by Bekaert. It is lighter gauge than "regular" barbed wire. But it has four-point barbs, and is especially springy and light.

(P.S> I'm not trying to endorse a particular brand here---just using it as an example).

So if you've got a farm store nearby, or a rancher supply place. I think a couple rolls of barbed wire would be worth it.

What do others think? Thoughts? Opinions?

Let's block ads! (Why?)
