I have recently discovered a BOL that I can buy 400 miles from where I live. I have been through the area a few times and often thought that it would be a good retreat area, with in excess of 100 acres, live stream (one of the few in the area), 40 miles from the nearest town of 2500, good water available for a water well (water table is 150 ft), electricity available, a mile from a paved road. No trees, but decent grass for livestock. I could build a small cabin and be self sufficient, as I have a complete solar system that I have in storage. Deer, antelope, etc are abundant.
Dilemma: I live on a good farm in my area, but its only 5 miles from a city of 20,000, and 25 miles from 1,000,000 plus. My family farm is set up nicely, and self sufficient, but security will be an issue. However, most neighbors are 1/2 to 1 mile away, water table here is 8 ft in places. I have a LOT of years and money invested in this homestead. My wife has a miniscule clue of what I have stored on this farm, and she has no interest in being prepared. She also doesn't want me to buy more land, but I have told her numerous times that I will in the future, when the land nearby becomes available. We don't argue about it, she just doesn't want me to take on more land because "God owns the land, not people".
But I really like the thought of being in the middle of nowhere, and this place meets most of my BOL requirements. The wife doesn't even know what the term "BOL" means. I'm going to drive the 400 miles tomorrow to look, just a driveby.
