Recently I encountered a lady who had just been widowed. To make a long story short she indicated that she was wanting to sell her late husbands pickup. This is a very nice truck, late model, well equipped, very clean. I asked her how she planned on selling the vehicle and she said she wanted to "trade it in on a mini van at the dealership".
I happen to be looking for a new truck myself. I told her that I didn't want to intrude in her affairs but that because the dealership would offer her less than the trucks' value that I would pay her $1,000 more than their trade in allowance if she would sell the vehicle to me. She would make more and I would get a good deal on a nice truck..... That was two months ago. At the time I had no real idea what it would cost me but knew it would be a better deal for both of us, it made sense to me.
She called yesterday to see if I was still interested in buying the truck. I told her I was. She indicated that the dealership had offered her $21,500 for the truck. Which to me was insane.....A quick search of Autotrader for the EXACT same truck-mileage, color, equipment, year model, trim level showed that the average dealer price for the vehicle was nearly $30,000. Now, I don't have a problem generally with capitalism I understand overhead, profit etc.... but that is a SCREWING that should be unconscionable. Not only was the average price much higher than their offer but I know that had I been able to find the same truck locally at a dealer the price would have been higher still because vehicles and large trucks in particular are always more expensive here.....
I looked the truck over carefully last night and drove it. I told her I wanted to buy it. She immediately says $22,500---That was our "deal".......That puts ME in something of an ethical pickle myself--- I hem and haw a little- I guess you could say the little Devil and the little Angel were having it out for a moment..........So after a bit, I explain to her what the truck is really worth based on what I know etc.....She tells me that it was financed and that Credit Life has paid it off-essentially that her "cost" is pretty low in the vehicle, and that she appreciates my honesty but it's still a better deal than she was offered and that our "deal is a deal". She wouldn't have it any other way after some discussion....
I know lawyers in general are not well thought of but to try and put a $7500 screwing on a widow really shocked my conscious. I don't see how people can sleep at night doing that kind of thing day in and day out. It's wrong. Period. At least as I see it....
