bullet loops on cowboy belt?

Just a random thought stuck in my head after watching a western last week.

I know they are not correct/accurate,but every one has a gun belt loaded with ammo in loops around the back.

Do you think they actually did this?

I can't imagine riding a horse all day,rain,snow,heat,dirt,that there would be any left in it when you needed it,or it would fire.
I've seen repo holster belts,can't ever remember seeing an original.

I have a shotgun bandolier,a couple other slings with them.A few butstock sleeves.They look cool,but my own personal experice,they are not very handy.
But thats now.

So,did cowboys have them?
