I have perhaps more cats than I'd like. I've tried various forms of litter over the years. Some brands are better than others. Some of the cheap brands are just as good as the name brands. Some brands are just awful.
But my main problem has been what to do with it. I go through a good amount of litter, so putting it in the trash isn't feasable. I don't have trash pick up and take it to my mom's house on trash day (she can have 2 bags a week and only has 1).
I compost most things, but cat litter isn't really what you want in your compost pile. I did find a temporary solution filling in some areas with cat litter and dirt. That was workable.
Then I tried horse bedding.

This stuff is really nice.
It's cheap - $6 for 40lbs (and sometimes is on sale for cheaper).
It doesn't clump, so it needs a bit more attention than just normal litter. But every day I just scoop all the gross things out of it. The pee just breaks the pellets down into dust, and will last several days before it needs to be changed (probably longer if you don't have lots of cats!). There's no gross lingering odors.
Another perk... the pellets don't get scattered everywhere like the litter did. Sometimes they spill a few when they get out, if you filled it kind of high, But it's not tracked all over the house between their paws like litter is.
And this stuff is fully compostable. Now I wouldn't use it in my normal compost pile, but I did start one pile just for this where I can give it a few years for any possible nasties to die. And it can be used on fruit trees with no worries.
