This subject has been debated a million times. Many try to make the "great whore" to be the Catholic Church. I wouldn't agree, way too many problems with that.
Since the great whore persecuted apostles and prophets, the Whore seems to have existed in the first century. Maybe pagan Rome.
It's anyone's guess.
