Article: Ultra-light BOB (for kids away at college)

I'll now have three kids away at school/military and I'm building them BOBs for Christmas. Here's the concept, then I'll attach the lists at the end. Please chime in anywhere along the way with input.

Plan A1: fly home.

Plan A: drive your car home (around 700 miles)

Plan B: ditch the car and ride your touring bike and Bob Yak trailer, with the Ultra-light BOB that I'm sending you for Christmas.

Plan C: ditch the bike (if you must) and walk with the Ultra-light BOB I'm sending you.

My emphasis is absolutely speed over security, ergo the ultra-light kit. I've thoroughly tested all of this gear this year, doing multiple long, multi-day hikes and one overnight bug out bike ride.

To get them home, I want them to go as fast as possible. So, the gear set has to be LIGHT! I'm estimating about six to eight days to get home (we've done numerous multi-day 100 mile per day bike rides, as a family, i.e. we're a cyclist family.)

So, hopefully, they can chew up some road in their cars and jump to the bikes if traffic or roadblocks threaten their forward progress. Walking is last-ditch and we can't have them carrying enough food for a two month trek if they're ever going to make it on the bike. Six to eight days of food will have to do.

The car bug out kit is another list. I'll attach that as well.

I've built the ultra-light backpack BOBs already. They weigh just 16 lbs. with six to eight days of food WITHOUT WEAPONS.

Anyway, feedback and ideas are welcome and appreciated.

I hope the lists give other guys someplace to start as they build their kids' bug out plan when they're away at school.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
