Gaming Monitor for MacBook Air

My son wants a gaming set up for his 11.6" Macbook air.

In the set up, he wants a new monitor. I know nothing about gaming and doing some quick searches for monitors, I realize I know nothing about gaming monitors.

Is a gaming monitor drastically different from a regular monitor?
