Abandoned mines as SHTF shelters? BOL?

A hole in the ground can save you or act as your grave.

If you could purchase a patented mining claim with a suitable mine shaft, that could be the start of an underground survival shelter. If you just wanna hide, it won't cost a fortune, just a lot. If surviving a nuke blast/fallout is the goal, it gets more expensive, etc.

Just like any shelter, you need water, power, sewage, food and warmth. Plus underground you have to worry about gases like radon, Co, Co2 and other nasty stuff too. In addition, you have ground water to worry about and you have to have a way to securely bring in and exhaust breathable air.

Besides the main entrance, you should have at least 2 alternative escape or egress entrances/exits. Everything needs to be hidden.

Big earthquakes, forest fires and floods can ruin everything, so you might be better off constructing a shelter inside the top part of a hill or mountain, that is near water and affords good views of the surrounding areas. Digging down into the earth, is really only useful for literally world ending events. Here you are going for camouflage, high up where people and vehicles don't go. The less earth and rock overhead, the better.

Most can't afford to do it the right way.
