Depending on where you are geographically and the layout of what's under you, why not store it under ground? Use a big tank or plastic weld the barrels together. Add a pump and a fluid level gauge (use a manometer) and you're all set. You could even set up the inlet so you can port the rainwater from your eaves directly into the system. Keep a water filtration system around to slap on to the pump and you're all set for long term water with less digging than it would take for a pool, less noticeable, and probably far less expense.
