$4.99 HPS Polymer AR-15 Magazines From Cabelas

For a couple weeks now, Cabelas has been running a sale on these polymer magazines.

I broke down and bought 6. Here's an overview (with pics) and my review.

From a price stand point, $4.99 is pretty phenomenal. Almost too hard to pass up. So did an internet search, and for the most point couldn't find anything. More on that later. Now, I'll be honest, I found out about these from a post on AR15.com. None of the Arfcom posters could find anything either. So here we go...

There are no markings of any kind on the magazine anywhere. No manufacturers markings, no date stamp, no caliber size..., nothing. When they come from Cabelas, they have no packaging. Just 2 stickers. One with a description of the magazine and the other with a bar code.

Here's a HPS polymer mag, a windowed PMAG, and an another HPS polymer mag. Notice that the third HPS mag has a PMAG Ranger Plate. The floorplate is identical to Magpuls floorplate, so you can add a PMAG Ranger plate if that's your thing. I wonder how Magpul feels about that.

Yesterday, I took out these 6 magazines and fired about 150 rounds. Not a lot in the grand scheme of things, but enough to see how they'd function. And, feed wise, they functioned flawlessly. Every round feed into chamber like a good magazine should.

Now here's the problem with these magazines. After they last round is ejected, the magazine doesn't lock the bolt back. Instead, the bolt is stopped by the follower, which sticks out too far above the magazine.

This is how it's supposed to work, with a PMAG.

And this is how the HPS mags fail to lock the bolt back.

Side by side comparision of a PMAG and a HPS mag. Note how high the follower sticks up.

Fundamentally, this the only flaw I've found so far. After the last round is ejected, the bolt is forward just enough that it renders the bolt catch useless, and when you release the magazine, that sends the bolt home. So after a magazine change, you have to pull the charging handle to the rear to chamber the next round. With a magazine that worked correctly, you'd just hit the bolt catch to chamber the next round.

So... if I were in a situation where my life depended on my rifle, I would not trust these magazines.

My opinion, stick to USGI mags, PMAGs, Lancers, or something proven.

These make decent range mags at best. I'd even rank these far below Promags.
