Groups

Lately here, I see more mention of groups. For the life of me I can't fathom how initial conversations go. I can understand how family or long term friends could get together. But how do strangers form groups? I'm not likely to ever discuss what/where/how re. my preparations so how does one bare their soul and talk of buckets of grain, medical supplies and ammunition? Do you get lucky? What if after all this, I don't trust someone? Is it we only hear about successes? What happens when SHTF and half the people don't show?
