I need to buy a gun

I've only ever owned 1 gun, a Glock 19. I loved it but had to sell it.



I'm looking for something different, $500ish price range.



I'd use it mostly going to the range, but my personal protection and home defense should still be in mind.



Also, I don't know anything about guns. So give me some explanation, not just a link to a gun.
