What are the usage differences between a knife, hatchet, machete, etc.?

Hello,
I'm new to the outdoor world. What are the fundamental usage differences between a knife, axe, hatchet, folding saw and a machete?
Also it seems like some of the usages overlaps, so where exactly do they overlap? And perhaps I should also ask where do the mis-uses or incorrect uses lay where one should be used instead or in place of another?
