1. Deer are most active at dusk and dawn, +/- 30 minutes. Legal shooting times in most states. I recommend you be at your stand/location 1 hours before sun comes up and 1 hour after it sets.
2. During full moon, they will feed at night. So unless it's the rut, I normally don't hunt those times.
3. Do invite someone who hunts deer regularly to help you learn the skinning/gutting process. YouTube is fine but there is nothing like it when your hands are inside a warm gut covered in blood, and God help you didn't gut-shoot them. Some butchers will field dress the deer for you for a fee. But I agree, field-dressing ASAP is ideal and makes your load lighter to get out of the woods.
4. Field dressing a deer is one thing, butchering them is an entirely different matter. Again, unless you use a butcher, invite someone knowledgable on the process.
5. If you end up shooting a trophy buck and want a wall hanger, be really careful when skinning the animal and leave more then enough cape for the Taxidermist to work with. I cape at least past the shoulder blade. Small nicks they can fix, large gashes are harder to work with.
6. USE GLOVES to field dress. I get myself a box of nitrile gloves from harbor freights. They work great and are cheap to boot.
I recommend a 30 or 7mm caliber but a 6mm/243 does the trick too.
