colored rifle stocks...

I just wanted some advice on a matter. Sometimes the little details are what gives us fits. After the conversation has run its course, the mods can feel free to delete such a trivial and asinine post.

What do you guys think about the colored or camo stocks for AR's, Ak's SKS's etc.? I'm mainly referring to the desert tan and olive drab ones, not the neon zombie green and princess pink disasters.

I've heard that through NVGs, a black rifle sticks out like a sore thumb, even if the bearer is wearing a ghillie suit or other disruptive garments. I've also heard from ex military, mostly from the sandbox that having earth-tone colors on your weapon is a good idea, as it aids in camo in the field. I don't know if any of this is true, but I'm sure some of you probably have some kind of experience or at least technical knowledge of these stories.

I ask because I'm thinking about getting a desert tan stock for my SHTF rifle. Admittedly I like it, but I can be a downright pragmatist when it comes to my guns. I don't want to get something just on the "cool factor", but I can honestly see the benefits of having some camo on my rifle that isn't a rattlecan job or something. So what's the verdict; Functional? Too tacticool?

My personal experience living without utilities for a month

Originally I was going to post this over in my homestead thread but I thought it would actually be an interesting topic to discuss on its own.

At the start of this month I was medically retired from the military and started my final bit of leave before being officially out. For the past year me, my wife, and my parent have purchased 80 acres and been slowly building our dream home on it. The idea was that it would be mostly ready for us to move in at the start of this year, but things came up, and we ended up not having any utilities hooked up when we finally got to Oklahoma. Because my grandparents live in town we had originally planned to live with them while we waited for everything to get hooked up.

Personally I had no problem living without utilities but I didn't want to put my wife and son through that. To my surprise my wife asked if e could just move out to the house and start building even though we didn't have any utilities. I was impressed and after trying to paint as clear of a picture of what it would be like and making sure she knew at least a little bit about what she was getting into I agreed. Interestingly a few days after we moved out southern Oklahoma was hit with a bit of bad weather and a snow storm followed by an ice storm over the course of two weeks which made things very interesting to say the least a good bit of time and energy was spent trying to stay warm which was somewhat challenging because my house is currently a 40x60 barn with no small spaces to heat up.

We primarily used a propane heater, and camp stove to heat with along with well made wool socks, cold weather clothing, and plenty of blankets to at night. During the day manual labor was the best and easiest way to keep warm and there was plenty of it to do, also when the sun was up it generally helped keep things warm, also in Oklahoma a great deal of cold comes from the wind chill so having four walls cut down on that significantly, and because the building is insulated it did generally say around ten degrees warmer then out side.

We also used a propane camp stove for cooking. Because the house is such a large space carbon monoxide poisoning wasn't really a concern, but if it was the end of days I don't think I would have relied so heavily on propane products, especially the heater. The stove would use a can ever three days or so, but the heater was burning through four-six cans a day if ran constantly and two if it was just used at night. (which is what we generally did) in all I think we went through around 60 of the green cans of propane before getting power hooked up.

For water we used cases of bottled water for drinking and cooking, then aquatainers (highly recommend them) for everything else. Currently we have a septic system hooked up to a toilet but still lack running water so we are using a 150 gallon water tank to fill up the aquatainers that we are using to run our toilet. Which brings me to human waste.

Most of the time until yesterday we used a five, five gallon buckets with a toilet seat attachment for all of our sanitation requirements, we would empty it every two days into a slit trench where it would then be buried. We made sure to no stick any toilet paper or baby wipes with the waste products, they went in the trash separately. One big thing I've noticed is how much water a toilet actually uses, ours uses 1.9 gallons for solid waste and .7 gallons for liquid waste, which doesn't sound like much but really is when your actually having to haul and move all the water your self. I love having a toilet, and would really miss not having one but in an extreme emergency where water was having to be conserved I would go back to the bucket method.

On sanitation of the buckets I found (my wife refused to mess with them other then making a mess in them) that it was best to dump them and then while everything was still moist rinse it all out with around a gallon of water to get all the solid things out of the bucket so much as possible. Then we used bleach and UV light to disinfect the buckets and remove any smell, the buckets were used in a rotation so each bucket would sit in the sun for around 10 days before being used again.

With bathing we cheated somewhat, we have family in town that we could visit every few days for a shower which was nice, though one week we were so busy we didn't have time and went six days without a shower, for those periods baby wipes were awesome, I personally wiped my self down once a day just to get the grim and dirt off while keeping the smells down. (A long day of hauling fresh felled trees, or putting in water lines works up a good sweat.) For hand washing we would use baby wipes first to get all the gunk and dirt off, then hand sanitizer to kill off any remaining germs, personally I have tons of little cuts all over my hands so it wasn't always fun but it worked well.

One of the biggest things I took away from this whole thing is the true meaning behind why people call things modern convenances. Power, running water, internet, and sewage are all things that make life faster and easier, without them everything takes a lot more time and energy. Want to poop? That means a three foot deep hole, and hauling a bucket full of waste. Want warmth? That means hooking up all the propane tanks in the cold, waiting for everything to prime and set up, (which takes a bit in the cold) or starting a fire, which means building a correct one (a skill many don't have) collecting the wood, and then getting it and keeping it lit. Want to get clean? You gotta strip down in the cold and get to scrubbing.

Also we really did get to live farmers hours, we got up with the sun because we could see and work plus it was warmer, then we all loaded up in bed as the sun went down because it was starting to get colder and our light was gone. The day before we got electricity my wife actually mentioned that she was sad to see it go, it is kind of a nice simple way to live. There isn't really much midnight oil being burnt because working by flash light isn't practical, and waking up with the sun is nice and very scenic. Having said that our first night with power we all sat down on the couch and watched a movie together after the sun was down which was a very nice way to end the night.

Overall the experience while hard has been very enjoyable and provided some interesting insight into what life is like with a family and no utilities. While it wasn't exactly what would happen during a long term disaster or something of that nature because we could easily go into town for anything we needed or wanted. But I think it provided a neat way of testing things.

Most importantly as a family it's given us a really big appreciation for everything we're working towards and all the benefits of modern civilization, while at the same time helping us to enjoy and respect the old ways a bit more as well.

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

Help on my gun range

Plant grass like you see on a golf course tee/green and cut it like it.

Gravel and sand will be more work than cutting grass, and end up a mess like dirt.

The club I shoot at cuts the grass pretty close, "most" of the time. Even when its a little longer, I still find most of my brass, and Im not standing still when I shoot, I move all over the place, with means brass ends up everywhere.

If you walk a 90* "grid" after you shoot, where you were shooting, you'd be surprised at how much you find. Knowing how many rounds you fired and keeping count when you pick it up is a big help too.

I normally find 99% of what I shot, and some days, I find 110%. Hey, maybe some of that was yours!

Know thy enemy - liberal websites

For those of you who haven't read it, Colt started a fantastic thread here: http://ift.tt/2jRip3q

I would highly recommend you read at least the first page or so.

Anyway, that thread got me thinking about trying to, in some form or fashion, keep up with the liberal spin on things in order to "know thy enemy" and keep tabs on things a little better.

What websites do you visit on occasion for this purpose? Are there any liberal websites you think gives you a good look at the liberal mindset and/or planning? On the conservative side I'd say that would be Breitbart and InfoWars, but I assume there's a few on the liberal side too.

Ethically Challenged DOJ Interim Director Fired

So if you are an employee asked to do something you object to, you may either resign or do your employer's bidding under protest. Acting against the interest of your client or your boss is not an option. The relics of the Obama Justice Department sank to a new low with Yates the acting AG.

No surprise the ethically challenged DOJ under Loretta Lynch, decides on a third option, working against her boss. Does anyone care about the personal opinion of their attorney they rely upon to do their job? Yates thinks her personal views are important more than her role as trusted attorney.

Acting Attorney General Yates stated:

"I am not convinced that the defense of the executive order is consistent with these responsibilities, nor am I convinced that the executive order is lawful,” Ms. Yates wrote in a letter to lawyers at the Justice Department, referring to her obligations as acting attorney general."

So she got fired. Like anyone would have expected.

Sen Blumenthal of Ct. lauded her dereliction of duty and deviation from the Ethical Code of Conduct.

Any wonder how Snowden, and others came to be, its those in high office who choose not to fulfill their obligations, (here to step down or do the job) and place themselves and their ego above their position. Any wonder how the DNC could all simply agree to rig the primary for Hillary Clinton? Any wonder how Donna Brasile simply decides to favor Hillary Clinton with questions prior to her debate with Bernie? Yates is of no particular importance or worth and will soon be forgotten, as just another errant employee with an ego so large they can't fulfill their function or obligations. She is symbolic of a Democratic Party without a moral compass, where the ends justify the means again and again and again.

So here's to Yates, a new low in attorney ethics. She is perfect for the modern Democratic Party. Look for her to run for office soon, or maybe get disbarred one or the other.

Next US election rumor

Default

The subject has come up a few times in the recent past. All I can say is, if that's all the democrats have to offer, they are in deeper trouble than we know. It's Hillary Clinto 2.0 and if what Trump does is successful, she wouldn't stand a chance, in my opinion. I do hope Trump runs for a second term. If he's successful, I have doubts that the American people will ever want a "politician" in the presidency again..

30 Pounds Of Cocaine Found on American Airlines Plane

I have a good friend who worked for AA as a mechanic, retired in 1997. His crew was mostly working out of JFK but they did travel out of the US now and then, one place being Columbia.

He said that everything they brought in (parts and tools, personal luggage) was subject to the same courtesy that would be given to a suspected drug dealer. Everything was gone through on the way in and out of Columbia. They themselves were fluoroscoped to make sure they didn't ingest drugs to smuggle out.

First post, big time Trump guy, tired of all the BS protesters and a big time defend my family kind of guy.
I'm into guns and hunting, just built my first 223 AR.
Odin 18 barrel, and man does she shoot!! Tried 4 different types of ammo and the biggest 5 shot group at 100yds was 1 1/4". I have quite a few guns but none that will do that. Some that are less then 1 moa, but only with hand loads.
Shot some hornady 53 grain superformance out of the AR and was close to 3/4 moa at 100yds. I think that will shrink with more scope and trigger.
So to the point....the trigger, it's a Geissele SSA-E.....with a lot of creep!
It's my first Geissele, but I expected more, way to much creep in the second stage.
I can return it no questions ask.
Is this just a bad one?
Exchange it for a another Geissele SSA-E?
Or go with something else?

Russian SKS Harded To Find?

For most of this year so far, Cabela's was sold out of the SKS and so was Wholesale Sports. I was told by a man at the gun counter from Wholesale that they probably won't be getting anymore because the Russian sanctions are making them harder to find. The Canadian Tire I usually go to has also sold out.

I then went to another local firearm store in Winnipeg and the owner told me that once he sells out of his current stock, any new stock would be sold at about $300. He is currently selling them for $230.

I noticed recently that Cabela's has more in stock...but what about you guys? has anyone else noticed an SKS shortage in your area? I'd like to add that in the past couple of months, Canadian tire raised the price of the Mosin Nagant $30.

Schumer: Democrats will seek to delay votes on Trump Cabinet nominees in response to

http://ift.tt/2kNf5DV

So, its "business as usual" for the Democrats? "Delay" and "obstruct", just like they always seem to do, especially over the past 8yrs, which is a big part of the reason they lost it all in the last election, and Trump is now America's president, and they now are going to up their antics to make the country worse than it already is.

This is the kind of behaviour that I read, in another article, "inheartens" Obama, the guy who embolden these people and their treasonous activities.

The Democrats and their zombie like minions in the Left will not be satisfied until America is engulfed in a savage, bloody, cultural and civil war.

Extremely sad what this great nation has become in such a very, very short time folks.

My Faraday Cage Test: Is this bogus or not?

Calling all electrical engineers, HAM operators, or EMP shielding experts!

I have 8 Baofeng UV-5R radios. 2 of them we use around the farm. But the other 6 have just been sitting in their cardboard boxes . Figured it was time to protect them.

So, I can pack 2 radios in a standard 1 gal paint can as the outer container -- seams and lid taped with aluminum tape.

I also used mylar bags because they have proven to provide some shielding (some of them anyway). In the experiment, I used two small bags (for which I didn't have shielding ratings), and one large bag that has a "EMI Shielding (MIL-B-81705-Rev-C)" rating of "40 db between 1 & 10 GHz". But, since I'm not a REAL engineer, I scarcely understand what a "db" is which is why I am wanting input on my experiment.

In the experiment I used two Baofeng UV-5R radios. From what I have been able to determine, these have about 130 db of dynamic range at most frequencies (see attached doc where a guy did some testing), which I THINK means that in order to keep the radio in the faraday cage from receiving the signal, I have to provide at least 130 db of shielding. I went under that assumption, anyway.

So here's what I did.

  • Turned on both radios and turn the volume all the way up on the one that went inside the shielding materials.
  • Put the receiving radio in 1 unrated mylar bag and sealed the opening with aluminum tape: radio received transmission loud and clear.
  • Put the sealed bag in a second unrated mylar bag and sealed the opening with aluminum tape: radio received transmission, loud and clear, but with maybe a hint of attenuation -- a little weaker and not as prone to feedback at close range.
  • Put the two mylar bags with radio inside a 1 gal metal paint can and seal up the lid with aluminum tape: could still hear the transmission well but with quite a bit more perceived attenuation.
  • Put paint can in 40 db rated mylar bag WITHOUT sealing it up -- top of bag completely open: the signal completely blocked IF the transmitting radio was placed at the side of the bag, but the signature was NOT blocked if the transmitting radio was placed at the open end of the bag.

So, it seems that the 2 unrated mylar bags + the sealed up paint can ALMOST blocked the signal. It just needed a little bit more shielding to block the signal completely.

I'm sure that I was not getting 40 db of shielding from the open mylar 40 db rated bag because it was not sealed up. BUT, just for cautious calculations, let's just say I actually got 40 db from it. 130 db - 40 db = 90 db. So IF it actually takes 130 db of shielding to block the radio signal, then the paint can with the 2 unrated mylar bags was giving at least 90 db of shielding. Right?

Is this a decent test? Does anyone have more reliable information about the dynamic range of the Baofeng UV-5R radio? [And, of course, this test is with MHz and and not EMP frequencies, but I don't know how to test using those frequencies.]

Thanks!

--- Lobanz

Best pistols for those with hand tremors

DefaultBest pistols for those with hand tremors

In the past I've won 30-some 1st place combat pistol trophies, but getting older I've developed hand tremors that make accurate pistol shooting almost impossible. I've finally found a partial cure. My pharmacist recently recommended using extra heavy silverware to cut down on the hand shakes when eating which I did and it worked. That got me thinking that maybe using heavy pistols might cut down on the hand shakes when shooting. So.........I dumped my lightweight carry pistol and replaced it with a full-size, full-weight, Colt 1911. It weighs about 2 1/2 times what my former pistol weighs (with both loaded) and when dry firing the shakes are much less. I'll post the shooting results after a range session.

Should I stock up on electronic components such as resistors, capacitors, diodes, wires, and tools such as soldering iron and wire strippers? I'm thinking they may be useful for fixing common electronic devices (blown USB charger?)

Red planet: A colonial boy on Mars (unedited)

Title - Red planet,: A colonial boy on Mars
Author - Robert A. Heinlein
Publish date (original) 1949
Length - (about) 211 pages - paperback

The book has been republished to include the sections that Robert was forced to cut to appease the editor - Alice Dalgliesh at Scribner's Sons. Even at that, the book quickly became a fan favorite.

Ostensibly, this is a Junive book, however, many 'adult' themes underlie the main story.

On the face of it, the story follows a teen living on Mars. As the story continues apace, he 'hero' of the tale, Jim Marlowe uncovers treachery by the "company" that places his family at some risk. As Jim and his friend - plus the likable Willis, a Martian 'bouncer', race to warn the adults - the adventure really kicks into high gear.

Reading this as an adult, I see many of the Libertarian views held by RAH leak out between the lines.

Language, as with all RAH Juvie works is plainly "G" rated - even mild, by today's liberal measurements. This is also a fast read. Well crafted and with a fast paced plot you will quickly see why this is considered a fan favorite.

The science part is just not there - Mars has proven to be a lifeless ball of dust - and the obsession of too many at NASA. It doesn't matter. The story could have been set anywhere... The story is a crackerjack, well worth the entry price.

Recommended for children - age 8 and up, and makes a good book to read to the kiddos looking for a bedtime story. It makes a solid story for adults look for some good reading with parts that should cause you to stop and consider just exactly what the story is saying.
Courage in the face of nearly impossible odds, love of family, and in a twist (well before it was a popular meme) getting screwed over by a heartless Corporation that is only worried over profits. All that is missing are duplicitous politicians.......

Have fun reading.

Modern Musette Bag

Looking for something modern and rain proof/resistant but similar to a WW2 US Musette Bag with Shoulder Strap. Looking for this to carry AK/AR mags and a bit of kit that won't fit in my pockets easily. I will use this primarily when out on foot/ATV/UTVs. As I will Bug In and I live on a small farm in a very rural area. I have no need for tactical bags and clothing but extensively use camo hunting gear. Typically I carry a 1911 in an Alaskan chest rig with a couple spare mags on my belt.

Anyone find something similar they really like?

Modern Musette Bag

Did I do this right

Below is my short two year history of prepping, from right out of high school, I want to see if y'all think I did it right

1) for a graduation present, my parents bought me an sp2022 to start off, I love that gun and it is my main defense handgun
2) I'm going through college and money is tight, especially working a part time job at little Cesar's, but I found a way to buy a hundred rounds of 9mm a month, plus have 80$ saved every month for an AR that cost 600

It was December when I finally had enough, and I went out and purchased it , at this time, I had about 550 rounds of 9mm
After Christmas and birthday in January I had 500 rounds of 223 and a good 350 saved up for my next purchase
I bought a used s&w model 66 in February for 420$
I built up to about 550 223, 500 9mm, and 100 38 with 50 357 magnum
That spring I invested more in things like solar chargers and radios, I already had a pretty good stockpile of food,
That summer I started for a Glock 23, and reached it by thanks giving. I got a 250 rounds saved up for it
My next purchase will be a good 308 savage axis

TOTAL INVENTORY
9MM-550
223-550
38-150
357-75
40-250

If it's in your sights the time is Right. Long live the Republic.---Ethan

G'day from WA (Australia)

G'day, I'm from down under, specifically the west coast of Australia.

I've always been interested in survival etc since reading the Australian Bushcraft book as a kid.

It seems as the world races ahead with technology that the basic skills become even more important.

2nd American Civil War

For those of you who don't know me, I have extensive history and connections in leftist activism from previous movements, but I'm essentially a pariah now because I split with them when the the SJWs seized power from the older relatively moderate activists and went full authoritarianism. None the less.. I'm still in all those social circles and I see the discussions going on behind the scenes.

After a long progression, and seeing how things have settled out afterthe Trump election: We're headed for rebellion and possibly a full blown civil war. I've always been skeptical of that largely because neither side would be willing to fire the first shot. That is no longer the case. There is universal calls for, planning of, and efforts to conduct warfare within the left right now. And I don't mean that in the metaphorical sense. They are raising their army.

What's always held the left back in the past is that they knew they could never win in a violent conflict. Both because of a lack of skill, experience, and equipment, but also because of internal disagreement on tactics; being that most within the left would not engage in violence because they believed the greatest strategy was to hold the moral high ground and ruin support and assistance to their opponents. This is no longer the case.

Within the left the pacifists have been solidly silenced by a massive propaganda effort and intimidation (expressing even remotely pacifist views within the left right now can put you in physical danger and in danger of losing things like employment and other social and economic needs). Even people who were extremely vocal and dedicated absolute pacifists, are now reduced to at the very least openly providing passive support for political violence.

And of course the biggest limiting factor is that they have known that they do not stand a chance against a well armed and sufficiently skilled political rights and moderates. After countless efforts to disarm the right in order to reduce it to an inferior fighting force, the AnComs and such have moved to arming themselves. It is no longer a social taboo. Everyone accepts it as a necessary evil. But beyond the arms, the turning point on this front is that they now universally believe themselves to have such a massive majority of the population backing them that they have a significant military advantage. This due to propoganda efforts (the same ones that told them Hillary was going to win in a landslide) and because of a massive mobilization network. They believe they can mass so many people at one location so quickly that they can overwhelm defenders and seize their resources, disperse, and then strike again repeatedly until the right has been defeated.

Here's an example of what I'm seeing being said within activist circles:

Quote:

History may occur in patterns but it's hardly predictable, least of all to the participants on the ground. In late October, no one really expected Trump would win. And tonight we are witnessing another unpredictable scenario--less than a week after the largest protests in US history, thousands of people across the country are shutting down airports to help their Muslim brothers and sisters. Make no mistake, what we're seeing is unlike anything our country has seen in decades. It's like Occupy and Black Lives Matter, immigration, and the nuclear protests all wrapped into one giant orange **** storm. I'm putting my chips on the table: Trump will be the first President brought down by a popular revolution...and it's going to happen in months not years. Obama's presidency bought mileage for the empire by assuaging liberals, but Trump is stepping on the gas with empty fumes. We are going to get our second revolution, and it will be spectacular.
This is not what I was expecting to see after a Trump election. I figured people would just get moody and ****y and whine and gripe, but eventually moderate themselves and return to the old left. I was expecting 4 more years of the left from the Bush years. Instead they've doubled down on everything and gotten far more extreme in their desire to forcefully impose their will on others and their belief that they have the power to successfully do so. These people are in a frenzy and they're now completing with each other as to who's the most militant and violent. That spiral will eventually escalate to a point of open conflict. I've never been so worried about a civil war as I am right now. And with my pariah status I'm concerned I worry I may very well become a target. It's enough that I'm out of the political debate for safety reasons, just like a couple years ago I had to pull out of street protesting for the same reason.
