****Ladies Section**** Genetic Testing and the BRCA mutation

Hello ladies.

I am reaching out here to see if any of you have been faced with the news that you or a family member has found out that you have the BRCA (1 or 2) mutation.

My sister was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Things are good for her. She has had it removed and is currently undergoing radiation therapy. The prognosis is good. During this process she had full genetic testing done and has the BRCA 2 mutation. She has already gone through menopause, so reducing the hormones in her body via ovary removal is not really going to do any good.

My sister is the second woman in my generation to have breast cancer. My cousin (on my dad's side) was diagnosed at almost the same age and is doing well. Her genetic testing should be back in a couple weeks and we will have a better idea what side of the family this mutation is coming from.

I am in the process of getting tested as well. I am in the age range (pre menopausal) that a prophylactic approach could significantly reduce my risk of breast and ovarian cancer. My insurance will cover the surgery (breast, ovary and fallopian tube removal) with a BRCA mutation discovery.

I have talked to a couple ladies that took this approach. One of them did it in their 20's. Both are happy with their decision.

So...here are the questions. Have any of you discovered that you have BRCA 1 or 2? If so, have you considered a prophylactic approach? Would you consider it if you did find out you had either mutation? Have you had the surgeries done for this reason? How did you do with forced menopause?

My sister thinks I am nuts. My husband is very supportive. I think it is the practical way to look at it. What are your thoughts?
