antenna mast option?

will be erecting my antennas for swl in a few weeks. one antenna will be a vertical, approximately 20'. the other will be a center fed slinky dipole in an inverted 'L' running about 30' horizontal. i was wondering if there are any distinct advantages in using something other than steel or aluminum for an antenna mast? i'm planning on the mast reaching up 30' from ground level with attachment to the roof at about 15' and guyed at about 20' and 28'.
does the metal piping also help serve as a ground plane or does it just cause additional interference with the receiving signal? i figured there was a reason for antenna lead stand-offs.
i was thinking of using 1" plastic pressure pipe (for water) with another 1/2" or 3/4" diameter of the same pipe run up inside. my thoughts were that the two pipes would give enough support and still be somewhat flexible for winds.
i also have the option of using rather tall and straight mahogany and/or palm trees and just attaching a mast in the upper trunk of either.
