The trick is to get those sparks heading in a predictable direction and holding the charcloth there. I would hold the flint and char together in my left hand and strike downwards with the steel in my right. Only 1 spark is needed to get the charcloth going and it's easy from then on.
The charcloth can fall apart though as it's so delicate. Other options are to char 5mm cotton rope (fray it to light) which is much easier to handle. You can also char punkwood to make touchwood, that lights as easy as charcloth.
