Colt 45 Question

I know these don't be used much anymore but just found something out I never knew before.

Mine is a 7 round mag, I heard there are 8 round mags. I looked it up and found it true but couldn't find if they were interchangable.

Is there a different Colt for the 8 vs the 7 round, or can you use both in the same weapon?
