Flaming Arrows

There could be a situation in which it would be helpful to start a fire some distance from where you are. That might be where there are multiple strangers/attackers approaching your location. The purpose might be distraction, misdirection, or even forcing them to change the direction they are heading. The reasons can be a discussion for another time.

In this discussion, I am looking for ways to make a flaming arrow that can fly though the air without being extinguished by the flight at high velocities, but also without creating a huge flaming fireball in the air.

The less visible alternative would be a device that will ignite on contact with the ground. That would be especially useful at night.

Is there anyone here who has had any experience with either flaming arrows or contact ignition arrows?
