Nets do have a place and checking in to run traffic can't hurt. They also offer a chance to get signal reports from an AO you are likely to want to contact.

I don't paly with nets much, as few have any traffic. I don't want to say dinosaur - but many are a legacy of a bygone era where radio was a necessity.

A lot of maritime mobile nets have fallen into disuse owing to cheap, low power SATCOM rigs.
