My main concern, and what I'm hoping to ask you guys about, is how oppressive are the local governments there? Where I grew up (in a different state), the township would come around and harass people who owned project vehicles and farm equipment and the like if they'd sat for one year, even out of sight of the road. Essentially no businesses allowed in our township except for farming. Building permits for everything even tho the township's population was probably <5,000 people at the time. Basically 14 different headaches wherever they could show up. I could go on. Basically, my wife and I want to be left alone to raise our family and homestead, and I'm trying to make sure that we don't inadvertently move into an area like the one that I grew up in. I thought I'd never miss the northern climate but after a REALLY long summer where I currently live (forecast says we're heading back to 88-94 degrees still), a change of scenery sounds really appealing.
Will people generally leave you alone out there, or is it one of those states where the powers that be go out of their way to micromanage EVERYTHING possible? If a guy wants to put up a new shed or something, how big of a deal is the permits/paperwork to do it? I know that it all varies locality to locality, but generally speaking, are there any strange laws concerning homesteading/farming/etc that I should know about it?
Do you guys who live in that state have to deal with things like the aforementioned? If anyone could give me a quick rundown on how "free" you are up there, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
