Which is why you keep a couple of grand in cash at home somewhere safe. Stores will accept cash when ATM's shut down for whatever reason or for however long.

A few years ago when a big storm wiped our some power lines down the road, the local supermarket was still selling their goods for cash. They had a backup generator to run the fridges and cash registers.
