Need a mechanic's opinion

Not enough info and in reality, impossible to diagnose this way.
HOWEVER......
I'll take a shot. first of all,if it overheated 'till it shut down/quit,it's TOAST
Several BAD things happen when engines overheat. Things swell larger than tolerances allow creating friction damage. Pistons scrape cylinder walls, connecting rods get tight, main bearings get tight, cylinder heads expand....I could go on but i'm sure you get the picture.
Oil cooks and sludges restricting lubrication to the valve train. "BAD THINGS MAN!"
If the noise changes with R.P.M.s it's not good.
Remove the serpentine belt just to make sure it's not an accessory.(water pump, alternator, etc) listen while standing close to the engine turning your head to hear from approx. where the noise is loudest.
When you drain the oil,do it when the engine is cool. Slowly loosen the drain plug watching for coolant/water. It's heavier than oil and will settle to the bottom.
Hope this helps.
