My Benchmade Had a good spine, the Mtech I abused for fun was actually one of the best knives for making sparks I've played with, without modifying, with the Mora I had to file a 90 degree on the spine and it is amazing after that, all my older knives, kabar, case, sharp, etc.. either had a good spine or i filed down a small part of them, but I use them more for training and playing around as they are all small blade, mostly for kids to use, small camp tasks, or fishing, and almost all of my EDC folders already had good spines.
I've seen people completely remove the coating off their ESEEs but I'm not fond of that, if it ends up in a box for a while that's a lot of maintenance to clean it up, being it's 1085 and I live in humidity central for now, had to clean up my damn infidel couple weeks ago, I know put some O2 absorbers in a box with them. But I wanted to get some thoughts of others and how they do it, especially since the laser strike was designed to be a survival knife with a fire starter in the handle, it does come with a washer for taking off the handle and you could use that I guess, but I don't have the original sheath and washer, as I got that knife used. Putting a striker in is small, minmal weight and could easily be slid into a sheath, on a ring, so many options.
I hate my buddy for trading me an ESEE now but I guess a knife addiction is better than other stuff and they can be resold/traded down the road with minimal loss of value.
Modify knife or separate striker for ferro rod?
