Met a Bear Today

I was taking a hike thru the Sespe Wilderness today when I met a bear. It was slightly up a ridge, maybe 40 yards off. At first I didn't even recognize it. It was getting dark and all I saw was a round black area. Then it turned to look at me and I could clearly see the brown muzzle, the eyes and the ears. A small one, maybe a couple hundred pounds.

I froze. It froze. We stood like that for a few seconds. I reached for my camera and it disappeared over the ridge as fast as it could. All I managed was an out-of-focus and over-magnified picture of a black blob that you'd never guess was a bear if I didn't tell you.

OTOH, I did get to see a doe with an older fawn and they held still for photos.
