Storing batteries in a BOB

I cleaned out my BOB this morning to transfer to a different bag. I'm not positive but I think this bag has been put together for four years. 75% of my stored batteries were bad/leaking. I learned not to store anything with batteries but felt like the way I stored them would keep. I used prescription bottles to store AA & AAA batteries. The batteries were stored negative down an positive up with a few rubber gloves used to keep them in place.

Have any of you found a good way to store batteries in a BOB for long term use? Perhaps just a 6 month inspection should be started. Any ideas appreciated.
