Talimena drive road trip

Some friends have expressed a desire to visit Tulsa during the fall. They also said they would like to take a short scenic road trip. I immediately thought of the Talimena Drive. I haven't been that way in 20+ years. DH has never been.

I'm thinking S out of Tulsa with a lunch in Krebs. E to the trail and a stop for the night. From Mena the next afternoon N to Fayetteville and then W to Tulsa. Sure I can follow the interstate, but I would rather not. Since I am not familiar with the area I hope someone can suggested some back roads. I would appreciate any advice - from the best time to go, to good places along the way to stop and stretch our legs or have a meal, and a cheap, but clean, no frills motel or cabin that allows dogs.
