What is used to 'glue' a head stone to the base?

We have ordered a head stone for a grave. It will arrive here at my home in the next couple of weeks and we are going to take it to the cemetery and set it ourselves. Yes, this is permitted by the cemetery, we've already notified them.

The head stone and it's base are gray granite. The flat, slab-like base is a simple rectangle of granite, weighs approx. 125 lb. The head stone is also granite, weighs about 100 lb.

Does anyone know what is used to join the top to the base? Is it a special adhesive or just a two part epoxy?

A few years ago I bought a granite vase for another headstone, and when the cemetery guy was affixing it to the head stone base, he had a putty sort of material he was rolling in his hands. He made a little rope out of it, about the thickness of a pencil, and put it on the bottom of the vase and then stuck it to the head stone base. It's affixed quite well, I've checked myself to make sure it's not going to come loose. I can't begin to budge it.

So does anyone know what they use? I want to make sure the head stone is not toppled off the base. I don't much think anyone will mess with it, but then again who knows what could happen. Tree falling, someone sits on it, etc.

I've tried calling a couple of local grave marker manufacturers to ask, but apparently no one answers their phones anymore....

Let's block ads! (Why?)
