What should I look for in a used SBS?

I've decided I'd like to acquire a good, working double barrel shotgun. I have one in 16 gauge but it's a family heirloom and I don't want to expose it to all the conditions I hunt in. New doubles seem to either be super expensive or indifferently made, although the Stoeger seems to be usable.

Anyway, what are some things to look for? Things to seek out, things to avoid, certain brands or models? I'd like either a 16 or 12 gauge, screw in chokes would be a nice touch but really not necessary, and I'd like to be able to shoot slugs. I refuse to run slugs or buckshot through my heirloom as it's already seen 3 generations of hard use (2 of those generations depended on it for food) and it's my responsibility that future generations get it in safe working condition. That one gun is the limit of my experience with doubles, so I don't know much.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
