Fuel generator to power electric vehicle?

I'm looking into the feasibility of using a fuel generator to power an electric vehicle like an electric wheelchair or an electric bicycle/tricycle.

Take the 110 AC output of a generator run it through a rectifier and then resistors to modify output level to match the power needs of the DC motor. Probably use a pulse width modulator controller to control speed.

Has anyone tried something like this?
