While on a 4x4 road in the middle of nowhere, I slowly made it up a crest and a guy started running down a hill flagging me down. He didn't seem hostile so I stopped, it was obvious he was a border jumper. If he was hostile, I would have been outflanked by far. I could only travel about 1 to 2 mph at the most. He didn't know a lick of English and I only knew a few words in Spanglish. I think he was asking about the distance to the interstate. I don't think he actually could have picked a worst spot in S. Arizona to try to cross. I was a good 3 hours away by car on paved roads to a major city. He was 50 miles (crows fly) from the interstate going over rugged train. The border patrol has the paved roads leading to the interstate covered the entire way with 2 security checkpoints and agents in SUVs patrolling along the entire route. He was so screwed and probably didn't know what he was getting himself into. It looked like he saw an easy spot to jump the fence and started heading north. There was also a giant Air Force air to ground bombing range he would have to cross or figure out a way around.
He said he was from Honduras and had been traveling for 30 days. He looked pretty beat and I gave him a gallon jug of drinking water. He chugged nearly half of the bottle down. I had passed some signs earlier in the day stating not to aid any illegals if I came across any. How could I drive on by and not help a person in need when I'm just out there recreationally? I had enough food and water to last me at least a month in my truck being a prepper going on a camping trip I gave him some sandwiches, fruits, chocolate bars and 2 extra water bottles. This was probably only enough for 1 to 2 days.
In hindsight, I should have told him to head back as he wouldn't make it. I had just arrived there and didn't know the location well. After camping around there for 3 nights and exploring the place, I realized how much risk he was putting himself into. The landscape was very harsh and the cactus are no joke. I got shanked by a small cactus in the calf while hiking out there and it hurt like hell. I think he had a 99% chance of end up dying or getting caught. I passed by 2 border agents on ATVs about 10 miles north of his location. They were on the side of a trail looking at footprints along a wash. Came across another on an ATV while rounding a bend and almost colliding head on with him. They also have a bunch of camera outpost and sensors along paths. I think evasion would be pretty difficult seeing how the agents would know these parts pretty well.
I'm all for higher border walls, deportations, against birth tourism, etc. God is watching and I would have felt guilty forever if I would have just driven on by in this case. I might have been the only decent person he came across in those 30 days. I also passed by Slab City over in Niland, Ca on the way over there. I wouldn't help any of those degenerate bums with my food
