Theoretically, not really. You will have people say you shouldn't hunt for large game with a 22, then you'll have those that say a well placed shot with the 22 magnum will do the job. Depends on which side of the fence/argument you want to sit on. Down here in Texas, a lot of us believe you Northeasterners are always huggy/happy get-a-long people, so you probably wouldn't need one for defense, plus it depends on if you live in town/city, apartment or subdivision, etc.
I believe there is a place for centerfire calibers, but I'm not the one who should decide for you. JMO
