Pocket knives?

Yes, I'm an old fart, and I grew up carrying pocket knees. In the 1950's, if a man had pants on, he had a knife on him. BUt it wasn't the same kind of knife as toady. Growingup, it seemed like THE pocket knife people carried, was always some small 2 blade jack about 3 inches closed. The main large blade was almost always a 2 and something inch clip point, and the smaller blade was always a slim spear pointed pen blade.

There was some other kinds of knives around back then, like haw bills, used by farm workers and flooring guys, and the old style Italian switchblades that were looked down on as a punks weapon. Back then, if a man felt a need of a weapon, and didn't want to carry a gun, blackjacks were sold in stores and were legal to have in a back pocket. Impact blunt force trauma tools were used by the men I knew growing up in the neighborhood in Washington D.C. were we lived. Wasn't a real good neighborhood, and most men carried something to hit with, including stout walking sticks or a large adjustable wrench in a back pocket.

Now it seems like every mans knife has to be locking blade knie with a lock that you can hang a Brinks armored car from, and be able to be opened in a fraction of a second. Blades are now designed with weird shapes, better I suppose for stabbing through armored plate of a medieval knight. Under laying theme seems to be now, weapon first and everyday cutting tool second. And it's got to be flicked open to be cool.

Does anyone carry a 'normal' pocket knife anymore, like Case, Schrade, or even an old Camillus scout knife from the old days? Buy and use a knife for just a cutting tool instead of some tactical talisman?

Let's block ads! (Why?)
