Personal Defense and Metal Detectors

I have been wondering about this topic for over a week. I was in Orlando with family on the day before the attack. We spent the day hopping around Disney (which nearly became ground zero). Unexpectedly, we were stopped at a rather random security check point near the entrance to EPCOT.

The bag check guy was getting nervous (as was I). My pack had N95 masks, first aid kit, tac gloves, tac light, leatherman, survival bars, kevlar panel, and other goodies that started to make him sweat about what else he might find. Eventually, he fake smiled and let me through with a "have a good day" and a roll of the eyes.

Here's where the irony comes in. My mother was selected to go through the metal detector. She's barely over a hundred pounds and was wearing a skin-tight sun dress. I guess she seemed like more of threat than I was with my twenty pound pack and 5.11 clothes.

Anyway, I got lucky there. My sister had talked me out of bringing my EDC gun, but I still had two aggressive-looking knives attached to my body. It could have potentially been a problem if I had been selected for the scan. I don't know what the policy is, but there may have been quite a scene if they had tried to shake me down.

So my quandary is thus- security is springing up everywhere, and I want to have a non-metallic option for carrying survival tools. My Amazon cart is now full of every plastic 'letter opener' they have, as well as metal knifes that come with a velcro nylon sheath that may fit one of the plastic knives.

Does anyone have any advice for carrying a useable basic weapon that won't set off sirens at a metal detector?

Let's block ads! (Why?)
