$1,000 for first shtf food prep purchase

Assuming storage space in a proper environment is not a strict problem I would start with common canned goods such as you normally consume. Avoid tomato products as they have a shorter shelf life insofar as the cans leaking after a very few years. Concentrate on proteins that you know you will eat; Yoder's and Keystone meats are two brands that offer a variety and don't require adjustment because they are just meat with a bit of salt - chicken, turkey, hamburger, sausage, beef and pork.

Auguson Farms is not my preferred brand of LTS foods but they are widely available through Wal-Mart and Sam's Club. You can find baking products and some fruits such as strawberries that way that have been canned for long-term storage without having to buy case lots or pay for shipping costs.

Once you have a couple of months at least of proper foods including proteins (meats) you can consider expanding to freeze dried and other purposely prepared LTS storage foods. $1,000 will go a long ways if you shop smartly in your grocery for foods that will last a few years, and which can be rotated through your normal dietary plans. Once that is in place consider very long life storage foods. But to start out worry about the next 3-5 years before you worry about 20 years from now.
