As far as the lye idea, I'm not sure that would work. Typically you soak the skin/fur in the alkaline fluid. However, in your case, if you do that, the bones will be liquified. You may be able to spray it on, but I'm not sure the outcome. Personally, I would call a taxidermist and get their expert advice.
